    Private Enterprise Numbers

    Hey All,

I'm wandering if you can help me. I've been asked to come up with some info regarding Private enterprise numbers. I've found a bit, but have to admit i'm a bit lost with it. Does anyone have experience with them and can explain their useage in laymans terms?

    http://www.iana.org/assignments/enterprise-numbers

Is a list of current ones. I'm a bit stuck here so any usefull english explanation is greatly received.

    Thanks

I'm unsure what you are asking. Why do you want more information about then ?, are you trying to do something specific and this was suggested as the way forward?.

I'm not sure that you'd need this unless you have a huge internet presence, and if that was the case surely someone in the organisation should know more than i do

They look a bit like unique OID schema numbers used in LDAP.

Thats my point - i know thats what it is - but need it in plain practical reasons.

the reason i need it is that the people we support IT for, wish to use it for something and want a way forward with it.......however, neitehr them nor us have any experience with it and before we can go ahead and kick it off - management need a real simple explanation of it.

IE we would use it for this : ...

Okay I think i've got my head round this, it seems to originally stem from legacy information, when there were regional telephone operators, and as such you had to inform people who you where, this PEN seems to be a legacy thing that was extended to cover the internet age.

If you are talking to equipment it would be possible to query whose kit you are talking to by the number you are being passed back, and then would have the ability to look up who it belongs to.

Why you'd want to do this seems completely pointless, and can't see why you'd want or need to do this.
