    Kitchens + Driveways

Anyone had their kitchen done recently? We are looking to do ours, not overly keen on places such as Magnet or wherever as I have heard some horror stories of it not being done properly etc. But if anyone can recommend anyone/where to come and do a quote and show us what they can do it would be appreciated. The house is based in North London. If you DO recommend Magnet, I won't shoot you!

Same goes for a driveway. Our driveway needs to be re-done as well as our front step. Any recommendations in that area would be helpful too.

    Ta muchly you Hexusites.

    DIY?

Kitchens are actually dead easy to do. We fitted ours out for about £600 and a week of evenings doing it.

In fact, the worst part was ripping out the old kitchen and trying to repair the walls etc.

If you're not sure on plumbing, get a plumber in to lay pipe to where the sink'll be, same for gas for the cooker.

I thoroughly recommend getting a sparks in for the electricity unless you're REALLY sure of what you're doing, and don't forget to check the latest building regulations for cooker electricity supplies as the cable size changed a short while back.

Seriously, doing it yourself will save you thousands AND your kitchen won't look any the worse for it.

Check out the range of stuff they have at Wickes or Travis Perkins... all good, modern stuff.

As to drives, depends what you want, block or paved or what?

I've got a great set of guys I use for work in West London (mostly retail stuff, but they're all round great when it comes to anything building related). They're currently renovating a shop I'm opening, but should be finished by the 14th if you need some laborours. They do electrical and plumbing too....they've saved my life with this shop....

Stay away from MFI. One of my mums friends spent a fortune with them and they made a complete hash of it.

Apparently the "fitters" (tho she thought they were pikies) left empty coke cans, crisp packets etc behind the fitted cabinets. Not only that but they started to get really abusive when she said she didn't want a completely different sink fitted to the one she ordered. They also handed her a bill for an additional £500 at the end of the job (I suspect they demanded cash).

There's been so many horror stories about MFI over the years that I'm astounded anyone ever goes to them for kitchens any more.

    Ikea?

They do a home installation service these days. I don't haven any experience of that service, but i do like their kitchens. Me and my dad installed mine without any incidents that weren't our own fault in the first place

As for drive ways, find a builder that has done more than one job for someone you know. If he is available quickly, then don't bother, the good ones are the busy ones.
