    Bristol student found hanged

A Chemisty student in my year (not an acquaintance of mine, however) went missing a couple of weeks ago. The university appealed for information a few days ago and Facebook had also been used to see if anyone knew his whereabouts.

His body was found in Wells, Somerset. He appears to have hung himself.

Google News doesn't have many sources right now, so I'll have to link to the dreadful Daily Mail.

Sad news, it seems our year is somewhat cursed. Must be a massive blow to his family and friends.

Some are saying exam stress was a major reason for his apparent suicide. I disagree with that somewhat, as all students are stressed at this time of year; I'm very stressed. There must be some underlying reason for him doing what he did, brought on by increased stress maybe, but a direct result of impending exams? I hope not.

Ahh man this kind of thing makes you feel so crappy.
He had everything to live for.
One of my mates was part of the halls where a student hung himself from the walls on his campus. Pressure from his family back in China was thought to be the final push. The whole campus grades dropped an average of 4% or so i'm told.
Awful for the family. He looks so happy in the photo

People do take stress in different ways though, and some cannot handle it properly, it is a shame though

I know how badly my exams went when my great uncle died in January on the evening of one of them (didnt actually attend it in the end) but to have someone on your course/that you knew well die is terrible.

TBH, suicides in Uni's are not at all uncommon. In some cases they are accidental deaths.
When I went to uni, a welsh student in my halls hanged himself naked. Turned out he was doing the hanging to asphyxiate himself whilst having a tommy tank to increase the pleasure.
When my mother was a GP for essex uni, there were several suicides every year.

Exam stress is just not enough to push you over the edge as a sole cause.

Maybe fear of failure and what he might have to afterwards such as dealing with family etc maybe. But not exam stress only.

When I was in halls three people died of meningitis within the first few weeks, and three others were hospitalised. We all had to get a vaccine. My flatmate had been hanging out with a guy who caught it (although I think he survived).

A year or so later a postgrad maths student jumped from the top of the maths building (one of the tallest on campus, unfortunately). I'm not sure it happened while I was there, but one of the halls of residence was a 13 storey tower block and was apparently a notorious suicide spot.

Basically, I think it's fairly common at universities unfortunately. I'd never commit suicide unless I was terminally ill, but my time at university was by far the lowest point in my life, so I can certainly understand why it happens.

I don't think suicide is something you(read: anyone) can really say is something you will or wont do unless [situation a/b/c]. I doubt the student thought "i'd never commit suicide unless [reason why he did]"

It could have been exam stress, we all have our own limits.

That's very sad, I was really hoping that this wouldn't have such a tragic ending.

That's sad When I was in school (I think year 8 or 9) somebody a couple of years ahead of me hung himself, aparantly he was pretty popular, the school was a different atmosphere for a while afterward, because it just hadn't happened before (that I know of)!

I spent the last week with my mate at Brunel Uni, and in these nice new 5 storey Halls, some girl only last month jumped out of her window in effort of suicide, but she lived. I hope she's able to put it all behind her and recover, whoever she is.

Poor guy. It looks as though he was doomed to greatness according to his lecturers. Perhaps the expectations were too high.

    Similar thing at Bath Uni:

    http://www.bath.ac.uk/news/2007/5/25/davidstreit.html

Too much focus on exams and not enough focus on actually learning. My relationship's just gone down the drain and 2 good friends are having issues as well. Bad time to be a student!
