What are you saying rys? You are saying that people shouldn't say things like lol and wtf but should instead type them out in full so you don't have to work out what they mean.

If it's not an emotive response, yes, type it out.Originally posted by Rory

I'm not against smiley's or emotive responses like "lol", they are fine. How else are you supposed to express yourself online?
It's wholesale chopping up of non emotive words and phrases that get on my nerves.
Rys
MOLLY AND POPPY!
I too hate these people, I also know some people who actually say "LOL" in normal speech which almost makes me want to do something stupid!
I did that once, agent hasnt let me live it down... I dont think he ever will...
That is exactly the way it is.Originally posted by Agent
your not alone, i get very ratty about this.
its like townies have taken over the internet
Drives me nuts that some people seem to have forgotten how to write and talk.
"In a world without walls and fences, who needs Windows and Gates?"
Totally agree. I DO use it when I am trying to cram an essay into a text message and am limited on words, but I just don't understand why you would use it for any other reason. Quite sad really ....and the worst thing is, apparently, the abbreviations are now in Collins Dictionary!!!!
(Must admit all the IMO, TBH etc winds me up a tad too!!)
I've had a lot of sobering thoughts in my time.... It was them that started me drinking.
Sair's got a point, all the people that don't like short hand yet i'm sure there are plenty of them that have used imo, iirc, afaik etc etc.
I know I do, and can't see the problem to be honest. The quality of some peoples posts are so gramatically flawed that i'd prefer it if they wrote a text message.
I personally think there are more important things to worry about.

I get annoyed with it all the time. I don't moan to some people about it cos I don't wanna get into arguments, but it annoys me. I NEVER use "txt speak" abbreviations for anything I type, I am just used to typing proper words fast.
Even on my phone I type using full sentences/words, because of the fact that the T9 predictive thing is a lot faster than manually inputting "2" and "u" and "l8r", etcetera, and that my phone isn't limited to 160 characters, but 469 or something, and most of my friends' phones have the capability to receive them
If people get 2 used 2 typin like dis den it will cum naturally 2 dem an wen typin a CV 4 an employee 4 example, dey wont accept their application for da job.
Lol.

well i fink ur all gettin wnd up about nuffin. wots wrong with txt its so quic to put in the fone or type on the web. i dont no why it annoys u so much. cya l8r love u xxx
It is really irritating. However in text messages i have to use abbreviations as my sony j7 has only 160 characters as opposed to the 600+ characters all my freinds have.
In SMS, it's understandable.
You only have 160 characters and not every phone as extended messaging support.
The complaint here is that in messaging services like instant messaging/IRC and email, there is no need for abbreviating every word

hehe
dont beat that chap sayin he timed out tryin to download a pint hahahaha thats hardcore abrivation speach
errr ? ? ?

I agree completely. If you have a keyboard in front of you then there is no excuse in my opinion.Originally posted by Shorty

If u use them in assignments and essays you're a moron looking to loose marks. Not only that, most are word targetted so surely you WANT to use as many words as possible.
I admit - i use stuff like: u, m8 (occasionally), iirc (cause typing out if i recall correctly is long!) afaik (same as iirc), imo (as before) and tbh because it takes a long time to type them out. And the obvious lol's and roffles etc cause it shows internet emotion which is as essential as smilies to distinguish a serious post from a funny/sarcastic one.
However people who use it in virtually EVERY OTHER WORD REALLY PISSES ME OFF. Im mean, cmon here! Youve got to be incredibly lazy, sms obessed or have no sence of english language to type out txt spk all the damn time
I dont like sig pics so i turn off sigs Which doesnt help when i dont know what ive written here! DOH!
Internet taken over by the text/CS generation?
I dont think this has too much to do with one particular application, whether it be CS or text messages. When you used to go into a Quake/Quake2 forum peeps talked in leet permanently even back then.
As you can see, I still use abbreviations like peeps. I'm scarred for life, truly.
