    Tooth extraction!

    ahhhhh, I'm in pain!

I had one of my molar teeth extracted on Thursday because my root canal surgery failed. Never have I been in so much pain in my life. You know in films where people torture each other buy pulling out their teeth with pliers..... it's actually true.

My dentist took 45 minutes to yank out my tooth and had to keep stopping because his muscles were hurting him. He said in 10 years he has never seen a tooth that had roots as long as mine.

I'm still in lots of pain though, it constantly aches although I have been been having lots of painkillers.

Anyone else had one of these procedures? How long before the ache's and pains go away?

For me it was about a week on strong pain meds following a wisdom tooth extraction with deep roots, just constant steady throbbing - hardly slept the entire week
Had I the heavens' embroidered cloths,
Enwrought with golden and silver light,
The blue and the dim and the dark cloths
Of night and light and the half-light,
I would spread the cloths under your feet:
    But I, being poor, have only my dreams;
    I have spread my dreams under your feet;
Tread softly, because you tread on my dreams.

I found on Friday that I am facing the chance of a wisdom tooth extraction myself, I had root canal work done last year and my dentist said I had freakishly deep roots.

    This does not sound good...

i had a bout of abscesses behind my rear molar, it turned out to be a wisdom tooth impacted onto the last molar, wedged against the roots. i was referred to hospital for a surgical extraction, due to me having a metal plate in my mouth i had to be awake for the op, so only a jab in the gums (well about 8)
he started pulling at the tooth until i felt my metal plate straining, my jaw was about to break, i had 2 assistants holding me down and couldn't stand the feeling he was about to bust my jaw, he gave up on that and cut me deep to expose my jaw bone, he then drilled a hole in the side of my jaw to open up around the wisdom tooth. after that he managed to split the tooth into 4 and it came out easy after that.

I was stupid and drove myself that day, against the advice given, i only just made it home before the pain was so much i was in tears, every bump in the car felt like i was being kicked in the head. I was taking double the dose of codeine they prescribed after my dad rang the docs to ask if they could help me, it took 5 days before i could leave the house, i drank tepid soup and drank tepid juice for 2 weeks until the bruising had gone down, i looked like a jaundiced desperate dan for nearly a month after.

anyway, Nick. I hope my story makes you feel a little bit better, i don't mind a straight forward extraction, i also have long roots. Don't worry until the dentist refers you to a dental hospital !

if the pains unbearable in the morning, go to the docs and get a codeine script !

I had four molars removed in the same session, it took a little over a week before I could eat anything more solid than bread. The next week I was in for double root canal.....I feel you pain man, I feel your pain.

Why would one need "Root Canal" surgery, will I ever likley need it if I keep my teeth clean etc? ('cause it sounds bloody painful!)

I have a simple procedure being done in 2 weeks compared to all of you guys, I'm gettig a crown put on my front tooth - the one I have broken 3 times!

On a good note , mouths tend to heal very quickly ! Keep on with the pain-killers , avoid getting something called 'dry socket' that can hurt like hell , worse than toothache! Keep drinks warm , not hot and another good thing to aid healing is swill with salt water , tastes awfull, but it does work !!!

Yeah the salt water swill does work, it can decrease the amount of time it takes to heal by about 30% (a figure my dentist quoted, random I'm sure but it does help nonetheless)

I had 5 removed when I was younger before I had braces, The procedure was everything you fear, pliers, local anaesthetic only, and a nasty tearing sound as the dentist grips with both hands and just twists.

Now they're telling me I need to have all four of my wisdom teeth removed too, IMHO 9 extractions is more than my fair share I've been referred to a surgeon who wants to take them all out together under general, but apparently recovery times are a lot worse under general anaesthetic than local. I'm not looking forward to it.
They told me I was gullible ... and I believed them.

Aww you poor thing they aren't nice but it will be worth it in the long run

Jon's had two extractions now the pain won't last long, Jon was fine next morning, you could try some Bonjela for the pain as it numbs the gums

My youngest has to have about 5 teeth out just before Christmas, he has stubborn Baby teeth that refuse to move and are pushing his adult teeth forward, he's also having a permanent brace fitted to pull his teeth back where they should be i'm not looking forward to it for him, I hope to god they knock him out... he's nervous enough as it is he's fine about the brace just not the extraction.

Ask for sedation , its far better! Its not a general , just a sit in the chair and nice sleepy time while they get on with it! Recovery time is less than an hour too . (kinda like drinking a bottle of vodka , without any side effects , you just dont care what they do , you are sooooo brave )

I must be very lucky cause I felt almost nothing after my wisdom tooth extraction and tooth implant operation. The Dentists thought I would be in a lot more pain than normal patients because of the trauma my mouth went through during the operation(wonder what he was doing while I slept... mmm). He said that he had lifted my whole top pallet off and peeled it back to get to my wisdom teeth because they were stuck far below the gum line, it was seriously swelled after the op but it didn't hurt so much.

My swelling went down after a week of yogurt and ice cream for food so I guess that's when the pain would of stopped if I felt any

    AAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHH

    Somebody stop me reading!!!

I can't deal with this kind of information....I had an overenthusiastic dentist who drilled out a tooth before the drugs kicked in then proceeded to get the drill bit stuck into a nerve. There's me screaming in the chair with this numpty trying to work it free. In the end he had to leave it and give me several more injections before I was numb enough for him to proceed.

Since then, if I need an op (fortunately only two teeth removal after they collapsed on graduation day) I demand hospital and general...I don't want to be awake for any of it.

Took me a long time to get over it, even for simple stuff like teeth cleaning, I'd come away with nail puncture in the palms of my hands without even realising it.

    I hate dentists.
