Re: New vegetable discovered....free range eggs!

it's good to see this being discussed in a grown-up way really as opposed to some other forums which would by now have " OMFG - you meat eating murders " posts on there.

I was talking to 1 of my veggy mates about this last night. One of the main reason he switched to being veggie was a severe case of food poisioning linked to his local butchers a few years back that made him severely ill for over 4 weeks and he lost quite a lot of weight.

As such he's not touched meat since.

You cant get proper complete protein without dairy/meat. Things like soya are theoretically complete proteins but don’t have a balanced amount of the essential amino acids so it is not as useful as meat/dairy based protein.

    Plus meat tastes niiiiiiiiiiiiiiice

Ah, but vegetarianism is not natural....we do not understand. What we do not understand makes us afraid. That which makes us afraid we mock. So you see, it's entirely rational, and natural. Unlike vegetarianism....which we do not understand.

Sorry Kalniel - Was was kiddin' in them posts.

If I offended you in any way I do apologise. I guess this shows the value of comedy is not carried by forums very well.

I actually respect veggies for their views about how animals are treated and living with a veggie has opened my eyes to a few things.

That said - I couldn't become a veggie as I like my meaty things too much like burgers, bacon, steaks and whatnot.

Re: New vegetable discovered....free range eggs!

Kalniel, You say you will eat fish if it is "from sustainable stock and ecologically sound". I dont understand how this could differ from any other meat? If you are vegitarian purely through taste, i.e. you dont like red meat then fair enough, but I dont understand how eating fish can be any more ethical as I have never seen a fish caught that didnt die in what must be some form of pain. All fish are hauled straight out of the sea and put onto either holding areas on the deck of a boat, or straight into ice. Because a fish doesnt squeel, you have little assertation of comparitive pain. Its fair enough eating cod that is ethically farmed, but very little is thought about the welfare of fish compared to land-lubbing beats.

I am only really happy to eat meat I know has been well farmed, raised and slaughtered, and its not like we are running out of sheep/cows/pigs is it? Where as stocks of many varieties of fish caught is simply not properly monitored and there is little in the way of farming for many species. I simply can't understand why some people percieve fish to be of the same order as plants, and that somehow their lives are less valuable.

I am totally against most methods of catching fish and other marine organisms. The evident effects of trawling, dredging and other totally indiscriminatly destructive are horrifying. Many reefs, especially those around our coast had little/no protection until recently and such many were ruined. These areas of corals and inverterbrae may well recover given time, but these environments for the current aquatic generations have been ruined, and it is sure to have a long term effect.

Quite happy to hear your comments!

    Ben

I'd be more worried about the Parisians in the soup!

Fish certainly isn't sustainably farmed in the EU. EU policy has devistated fish stocks. It's one of the reasons why I try to eat fish that isn't on the endangered lists.
