I think that on the one hand, as much as of a global phenomenon such as the original Star Wars film must have been, I'd say, if it came out now, with today's technology etcetera, it wouldn't have been the roaring success it was.
We have to remember, times have changed enormously since the Star Wars generation; our lifestyles, education and of course our society has changed in many ways, beyond recognition to the 70s.
As has been mentioned already, there are so many mediums for media to reach us that the global audience has vastly increased; all of a sudden, cinemas are no longer the only dominant source of films or enterainment itself.
We are having a waves of films / television shows and animés distributed freely on the internet whether its on the likes of Youtube or Bitorrent and I'm referring to films / television shows along the lines of Pure_Pwnage, Red Vs. Blue and many more which have become huge successes around the world, this sort of thing would simply have been impossible ten years ago.
What I'm saying is, thanks to the expanded array of media available to us, we don't have a single generation defining film anymore, that age is gone, we now have many films as well as games consoles, games and television shows that define a generation, cinema no longer has that monopoly.
There is no more generation definition anymore as such, we quite have arguably a richer and consistent standard of media thats so defining that its become as widly accepted as pizza thats to say, pizza is nothing special anymore its just a natural and organic part of our modern lifestyles.
We are so spoilt for choice coupled with the fact that generation defining films, games etcetera are so ubiquitous we take it all for granted.
On the issue of going to the cinema with a girl, its about getting the right balance, when theres a lot of nattering and waffling, then you get busy, so as you can imagine Transformers was tricky for this method
Also, my woman was a closet gamer in the beginning of our relationship, Since then, I always suspected this and tried to get her to come out of the closet, now that she has finally came out into the open about how she has secretly loved gaming and disclosed that one of the many reasons she fancies the pants of me (literally ) is because I'm a geek, just not overtly or overwhelmingly.
I always knew she was, as every other girl I've had some interest in was put off by my incredible technological knowledge and the amount of time I spent playing games.
Personally, playing a videogame with the missus co-operatively or competitively is one of the most intimate and fulfilling experiences you can have other than...fornication itself, I'm so glad to have a gamer girl for a girlfriend (sometimes you CAN have everything )

awful lot of girl gamers playing Halo, i know quite a few that play WoW too. I have met one girl through playing games, and although its not an experience i am likely to repeat (its not something i actively seek in a game), i do know of several couples who have met through online games.
Does this generation have a Star Wars though? i would have to say no, there is nothing out there quite as all encompassing as Star Wars, both in the marketing stakes and the films themselves. The Harry Potter books are superb imo, i love them to bits, but there is nothing quite as iconic as the Millenium Falcon and nothing quite as enviable as owning one (i never did, my mates a git tho).
I have to say i am not the biggest SW fan around, i liked them and all, but theres probably noone in this forum that hasn't at least once spoken like Yoda, made the Darth Vader breathing noises or.... over ..... gold.....bikini, even if Friends did bring it to your attention. I don't think HP has that kind of impact as i don't hear many people shouting Expelliarmus at each other in the street.

It cant be as i have never played halo, and have no desire to, but im pretty sure i would hate it, like every other game that isnt cs:s
I do think that the matrix series was a good point, however you will find that MANY people cant stand the whole harry potter franchise , me being one of them, the books were great. But it just went ott and i got bored of it.
I think the simspons is probably a candidate in terms of something a lot fo people can relate to of recent times just because its so damn popular.
And also i would argue that games like tony hawk are probably more widley played and liked by all ages and genders than halo.
I'm not like your common or garden black guy at all, some people go as far as saying I'm not really a black person but if you ever come to another London meet supposing there is another, you'll see (and hear ).
However, I quite embarrassingly missed the last London meet as I was working and in college and wasn't really on my PC as often as usual.
Naturally, things have changed since then...lots of things
Eh?

Well Fro, I knew a black kid once - listened to Oasis. That was the least black black kid I've known.
Can you beat that?
Either way, you know what, its not the color of our skin that counts, we is all the same on the inside...

agree with kalniel - people wait inline for all sorts of things they love. e.g. back in the OLD OLD days, some of our granddads would be collecting stamps...some grandads still line up for any postage stamp launches....
BEANFro Elite, your statement reminds me a dave chappelle show where he was comparing the different types of musical instrument, different people were "suppose" to enjoy (e.g. whites - electric guitar, blacks - drums, etc etc) at the end, its just bloody instrument, enjoy what you enjoy
