Re: How long can a spider survive under a cup?

we have had a couple of big ones in the bathroom this year, scare the crap out of me. I Never kill them, just get a glass and put them outside. In the end they catch flys etc and flys arew dirty little gits so although I am scared of them they do do a good job.

Been having a mooch around for these. If this really worked it could save a lot of panic come August/September/October time every year. I can see people talking about them online, but nowhere to actually buy them from.

They are all over the shopping channels iirc - try price-drop.tv and bid-up.tv etc etc, you should find them there..or browse the channels if you have sky If they are on shopping channels then you'll probably also find them in your nearest co-op department store too along with the JML stuff.

A friends mum has a set of these and apparently they do really work - shes not seen a fly/spider/wasp all summer in her house!

Re: How long can a spider survive under a cup?

i have one of those, its sorta works, i got it ages ago, it supposedly works by "emitting an ultrasonic frequency and by creating an electromagnetic frequency in teh wiring of the house"....

i have found spider repellent sprays to be the most effective, the one i have is called "no more spiders" the only downside is that you need to re apply every few weeks around every crack or window a spider could get in, and when you do the house stinks of cinnamon for a few hours....

Re: How long can a spider survive under a cup?

I'm not particularly scared of spiders, but I don't like them much either. If they keep out of my way, I have absolutely no problem with them (i.e. the ceiling and under beds is theirs, the rest is mine).

However, I heard a thud on my pillow last summer and turned my light on to see a great big house spider eyeballing me, nearly smacked my head on my bedside light vaulting out of bed. Needless to say, he was on the business end of a soup bowl and a bit of cardboard and ejected from the premises. Think he was the one who used to play chicken with my dog running from under my bed to under my table, I'm sure he used to bet his mates he could make it

Oh and when they hide in your towels as you're getting out of the shower that's just not cricket

Re: How long can a spider survive under a cup?

How funny that this thread should be here. I have just moved into my new house and found that house/cobweb spiders definitely like it in my house. I have politely ejected about 8-9 of the little buggas in the last couple of weeks. But that's into my shed rather than directly outside into the yard (as previously mentioned, they won't last long outside). I have a glass & cardboard setup in my kitchen ready for them.

I woke up the other morning and went to have a wash. Bloody monster in my sink. We had a staring standoff where I calmly informed him that he is currently trespassing on private property, hasn't paid me a penny in rent and will be evicted by Dyson if he doesn't do one.

I used to be fearfully arachnophobic but this has subsided and I no longer run screaming at the sight of a 8 legged fiend. I consider the above a significant improvement towards tolerating 8 legged monsters!

A lot of them are dying off this time of year anyway - I've found about 4 large ones nearly and actually dead in the office at work in the past two weeks.
actually, apparently house spiders are the most venomous native to britain (think i saw it on the really wild show or something!) - usually they're really too small to break the skin, so the small ones are relatively harmless, however, the worrying thing is that they're getting bloody huge, and the bigger they get the easier it becomes for them to break the skin and bite you.... THEREFORE, spiders are bloody evil, and killing them is human survival instinct!

We had one on our livingroom wall that we had to use a SAUCEPAN and a MAGAZINE to move as it was too BIG to fit in a PINT GLASS!

    I hate, HATE, HATE spiders.

Re: How long can a spider survive under a cup?

i really need to overcome my arachnophobia, i'm scared silly and have this really odd thing where, if I see a spider, i will get transfixed and stare at it think how im going to kill it and whether it will be too fast for me..

    the pics didnt help..

I think global warming's biggest effect on me is bigger spiders, surely that's a cause we need to unite for in order to stop

Overcoming arachnophobia isn't easy. As my previous post says, it's taking a lot of effort to not run a mile when I see one.

    I am using a plan:

    1. See one, resist temptation to run. Instead look at it and remember it's about 2% of the size of you. If you saw a USB memory stick on the floor (about the same size) would you be scared of it? No. Even though USB sticks cannot run away from you at 30mph.

    2. Capture. Once you can stay in the room with one. Start a gameplan of capture. Resist the urge to plant your foot on it. Instead grab a glass (not a cup). Slowly place the glass over the offending critter. Your heart will be pounding at this stage but you can do it. Take a moments breather and admire that you have captured the spider. Now remember that it will be terrified. You think you are terrified? I guarantee you that the spider is definitely more frightened at this stage. What are you scared of now? Nothing. You just faced a fear head on and no harm came to you. Get a piece of thick card (large insert from a magazine is good here). Tilt the glass enough to slip the paper underneath. Do it slowly or you could trap one of it's legs. Not very nice to Mr Spider if you do. Once slid fully underneath glass, slide your fingers carefully under the card while holding down the glass with other hand. Lift. Move to outside area (such as shed) and place down. Lift glass quickly and free the spider.

    3. Make a brew and marvel in your ability to have captured it, not hurt it, been a good samaritan to a creature about 2% of your size and facing a fear.

    Worked for me

^Perfect! I keep trying to drum it into people that they can't hurt you and if they know you're there then they'll do everything they can to get away from you.

A friend of mine got miffed whenever I told him to strap on a pair every time he panicked when he saw one - subsequently he now rescues them and puts them outside and so does his wife (who used to kill them too.)
