Any plumbers in here? Got a shower question... It's cold!

I'm a guru at showering, a shower connoisseur shall we say. However having just moved into a new apartment I've found the electric shower to be damn cold.

The shower in question is a Triton Topaz T100i, which now appears to be discontinued.

The shower has a range of 1-10 and HOT, COLD and ECONOMY setting. We're running it at 10 and HOT and well, it's barely even luke warm. Motivation to get in the shower on a morning is hard, getting out, is harder.

With it being an electric shower, could it just be that the element is duff? Would this be an easy fix? Or are we talking something deeper here?

Any plumbers or what not got any ideas?

Re: Any plumbers in here? Got a shower question... It's cold!

    It's your water supply.

The electric shower is designed to take in water at ground temperature, usually about 10 degC, and heat it to around 40 degC.

As your shower is outputting water at around 20 degC, this means that the water must be entering your house at roughly -10 degC. To solve this issue, you may wish to light a series of small fires around your house, which will warm up the ground.

We had this with one of the power showers at my parents last year just as i went to visit for xmas! Turned out part of the element was nackared, easy and fairly cheap to fix. But enless you know a plumber who won't rip you off, a new shower might cost the same as his call out!

How bizzare we have a similar shower at my uni house! We had a similar problem! My housemate ended up buying some strong limescale remover and gave the shower head a good clean and I think he said something about taking the shower apart as well, not to sure mind... Showers arent (last time I saw prices during my very brief stint at B & Q's in the summer) that expensive. Perhaps just easier to buy a new one if there is something wrong with the current one?

Yep you can cheaply buy a new one, and although electricity and water sound like they don't mix it's apparently an easy DIY job to install.

I was pleasantly surprised to find it was only a £50 job to fit a new one earlier this year... (After being electrocuted when trying to fix my old shower having forgotten to turn the power off first as it was the 3rd time that day I had to take it apart and about the 10th time that week... and yes it *hurts* and if I was in a metal bath I'd probably be dead now).

ebuild: DIY Electrical Work & The Law - PART 1

The law regarding DIY electrical work changed in 2005. Suggest you read the above before messing about with an electric shower.

Cheers for your replies. Would love to swap it out, but its a rented apartment. Still waiting for word from the landlord.

One thing I've noticed, we do actually get really warm water at the start, as in you can actually see the steam, however, this flurry of hot water lasts only 5 seconds before it gets to its horrible luke warm state.

First thing you'd do would be to remove the shower head and descale it.
To err is human. To really foul things up ... you need a computer.
