Yep, they do; and you know what happens to those naughty scamps, after a while?

    That's right!

A mod looks at their last 20 posts, and when he see's nothing more than 'lol', 'u rulez!!1!' and 'OMG!11!' he presses the big button marked 'reset post count', and whatever the person in question was spamming to get, is now a lot futher away.

Why'd you change the plane sig pic, Al? Not happy with it, or just trying to get one more like mine?

Did you make that one yourself?

Ah... did you make a new one, to draw attention to the upgrading of your computer, finally, from a ZX81?

Luckily we've got an open fire in the main room so it's not too bad (as long as somebody can be a***d to light a fire

Upgrade ain't actually happening now till next week anyway, courier has been delayed due to 'weather' problems! Hehehe!

Yes, I done it myself in 10 mins of my lunch break, so it's gonna be worked on at some point of the weekend, try and make it look better.

Self portrait is it? I can see from that rosey glow in your cheeks, that this photo was taken on one of your better days.

Weather delay? That 0.000000001 of an inch of snow that we had, was it? Other countries are like that 90% of the year, and they don't grind to a halt. The bloody bin men didn't collect the rubbish round my way either. 50 snow flakes, and all services are off.

    They've just been delivered!

Now all I have to do is get a new CPU...

:edit: No it's not a self portrait dummy, though it does look like me on a good day...

It does seem a bit strange that you can be trusted to buy, sell, and do various other serious stuff, after 50 posts and the amount of time on the boards that it takes to get those, but need 10 times that amount, to be trusted with the far more important 'little picture under your user-name'.

Where did anyone say it was a matter of trust ?

Well, I wouldn't want to buy anything from someone who arrived on the boards Monday, and was flogging stuff Tuesday. I'd like to have seen them around the boards a bit first, contributing to the community, so when they reach 50 posts, and can buy and sell, you can trust them, at least as much as you can trust anyone online.

If they can't spam those 50 posts, they have to part of the community, and there are easier ways to con people than hanging around here for 50 posts, just to rip someone out of a tenner for a mouse-mat.

Anyway, point being, to buy and sell you need 50 posts, to have a picture under your user-name, you need 500 posts. Just seems a bit skewed.

Personally (not that anyone gives a monkies what I think, but seeing as I'm offering my opinion) I can't see any reason at all for needing a certain amount of posts for an avatar, but would like to see the amount needed for the Wanted and For Sale forums raised, to 250 or so.

Make it a place for regulars to flog stuff, to others they have been around for a while, and make it out of spam-to-get-in reach.

Still, that's just me. Keep up the good work Mods and Admins!

well the amount needed to have an avatar went from 100 -> 500 perhaps tis about time that bargain hunt was set at 50 and buy/ sell was moved up to 100. It's hard to make regulars feel the love they obviously lack in the real world, whilst still attracting new members. Remember that new members are born ever dayy, are discovering hexus every day. They cant keep moving the post count up to match ours. Honestly we'll end up talking about young people....

A little technical info for you...

Avatar's are stored as blob data in the database. The more avatars in the database, the bigger it helps the db get..

"But Shorty, it's only a few Kb.. that's nothing".

Sure it's only a few mb total NOW but what about in the future? At the rate this community gains members... dum de dum.. it quickly goes from 2mb total to 20mb...

As the SQL size escalates, backups take longer to mirror and never the twain shall meet. We take every precaution necessary but something has got to give when the backups get to 500mb+ every hour.

Set a precedent and a limit now and we avoid some headaches later on down the line

Avatars are a privilege not a right as previously stated, but there is a VERY good technical reason for limiting the number. If you ever have to sit in the shoes of a server admin, you would understand the "bang my head against the wall" syndrome that _can_ develop.. very fast.

Prevention is better than a cure
