No - i've seen it about and briefly tried it but stuffed it up (my fault). TBH the screen res is surprisingly fine for most things (when surfing I use the browsers 'full screen' mode) and so it's not so much of an issue for me. I should imagine it will blur a fair bit though and not be too amazing for text. You've reminded me to sit down and try it properly again - always something else to do!

Great news about the resolution increase, hopefully they can get the pricing low enough to continue at ~£220. I would definitely consider replacing the 7" at that price, but thats where they're either going to sell boats loads or none at all.

If they price it over £300 I think that a lot of people will think twice.

Re: Asus - Gimme nine inches

I'd definitely be up for a sub £300 laptop, the size of a small hardback book, with a 1024 x 600 screen. An 8 or 12 Gig hard drive is a bonus, but not a deal-breaker.
Although, sure, it gets into 'proper' (ie Celeron + 1 Gig + Vista = Yuck) laptop monies, there is simply no competition yet for physical size and weight.

In my mind, this competes with UMPC's and PDAs more than regular laptops, and from that perspective it stomps on them all (for the price and usability).

Well done ASUS, keep the price under £300 and i'm sold.

Re: Asus - Gimme nine inches

im thinking that the 1024x768 of my current laptop is as low as i would ever want to go again, while a 1280 x ... would actually be a nice upgrade at the same time as a size shrink. and if i could tease one one the new eee's up to that then i would HAVE to get one. thats presuming you will be able to with them of course but i dont see why you wouldnt

Hmm..... MAY be tempted to switch the top part over from my current one as 800x480 is a tad low for my liking

Speakers are good for their size I agree

If it's the 800x600 one then I have one version where I have to scroll the screen, want to try the other one for games though

    yep.. "the other one"

1280x1024 if that was native res, on the bigger screen, how good would that be?

Re: Asus - Gimme nine inches

The current hack (apparently) allows 800x600 and 1024x768 in scaled mode (i.e. no scrolling). 800x600 is apparently ok for surfing (i.e. text). I've just grabbed the modified drivers and the switcher to try later on tonight (if Mrs DAngel hasn't got me going out!).

800x600 in scrolling mode is there by default if you install the Asus Driver disk.

Remember it's a widescreen so 4:3 modes will look particularly bad.

Totally agree, if it's under £300 (closer to £250 tbh) then it would be great. But i read somewhere that the new screen will take 1W extra power, and they haven't improved the battery AFAIK. They also haven't said what CPU it will have either.

Re: Asus - Gimme nine inches

Tried the resolutiion hack last night - and I didn't like it much. It does work but i couldn't live with 800x600 let alone 1024x768. Once they do 16:9 modes it'll probably be better and I can see it's use for gaming. For text? Nasty. But then I'm pretty picky when it comes to res.
