    Fixing a leaking toilet

I know how to fix a leaking toilet. At least I thought I did until all the toilets in our house started to leak, 'causing them to top up the cistern every 30 mins or so.

Easy fix, I thought to myself, and whipped off the top of the tank...at least I did once I'd figured out it was fixed on by means of a screw located underneath the flush button - it's one of those half flush/full flush press button mechanisms.

Inside was something that looked like it should be in the tardis. The whole mechanism is contained within a single central cylinder, and for the life of me I can't figure out where to start. The cylinder's about 6cm in diameter, with the top of the mechanism directly below the button on the toilet's exterior. The float seems to be included in the top half of the cylinder, but I can't see anything that can be tightened to stop it from leaking.

Has anyone seen one of these, or have even the slightest clue on how it works? I don't want to start taking it apart in case I flood the place - which may be technically impossible, but I'm sure I'll manage it somehow - and could do with some insight.

There is a screw object which comes up in to a valve - you might want to raise this - its normally on the left - and has a sort of V shape clamp which controls water intake.

ah its one of the ones without the normal ballcock, but instead a roundcock.

there should be a float that goes aroudn the central shaft, that has the water come in. there should be some plastic adjusters on that for calibrating the stop point.

    Re: Fixing a leaking toilet

could do with knowing where its leaking from ? overfillings probably the torbeck valve if it looks like

if its leaking into the toilet bowl it may just be a dirty seal on the rubber ring thats at the bottom of that big round thing out the tardis. can often be sorted by sticking your hand in there when it lifts up during the flush and wiping it over to remove any crud

    Re: Fixing a leaking toilet

Funnily enough I had the same sort of problem with one of the new toilets at work today. The repair guy reckoned it was a sticking seal which was causing the water to leak into the bowl.
