I've always been a bit hmmmm about laptops. Desktop at home with wireless keyboard and mouse but then I've never been a massive pc gamer. My Mum and stepdad bought a laptop each in teh States last year, and apparently giggle when sending each other emails in bed.
I recently bought my first laptop for £350, i never really saw the point of them before as i have a desktop. I still use my desktop for multimedia, gaming etc but im finding i am using the laptop more and more, its nice to be able to use it anywhere and have a quick look around the net when sat on the sofa! So if i buy another one in the future i would probably spend £400-500 to make it a bit faster and lighter.
I spend a lot on a laptop normally as its my main machine
I need everything in one package, including portability, so i usually go for Sony's ultra portables, i've had the S-series which has been great, now trying to get an SZ
they are pricey but i get everything in one small machine
SZ's are really nice. Check out the XPS M1330 or the vostro 1310 which was just released though. The new penryns are offering a lot of laptop for the money.

I've voted 501-699, on the assumption that i would be buying a laptop that i actually needed. the reason i chose this amount was because i couldn't justify any larger sum of money on something that i would be carrying around, for use inside, outside or the back of my car etc. i think that 5-700 pounds would buy something compact and powerful enough for needs that i could ever see arising in the near future. the only reason id ever go more than this is if i was guaranteed a much much better battery life. but that would never happen!
as it stands i've got an old p3 1ghz dell c400 (i think) laptop that i use for fun, which didn't cost much at all.
hey thanks, just checked out the 1310, shame it looks so cheap and basic, good spec! I had a look at the M1330 in currys the other day, its pretty nice. But at the price i think i'd rather get an SZ on ebay.
wish Dell would get the design right, sometimes i think they purposely make their products look a bit cheap to carry on that Dell tradition
got to admit though, the carbon SZ i saw in john lewis looked cheap when it gets battered, need to keep it in good shape
