New poll: How much will you spend on your next laptop?
Vote and discuss...
My vote and thoughts in a moment.
I voted £300-£499.
I'd get a 2nd gen Eee PC, provided it's got improved battery life, and might spend some extra moolah modding into it anything they missed out... if I find myself missing something.
I have a beefy desktop for heavy stuff - all I want is a cheap mobile laptop that's good for taking places.
My next laptop will probably be between £300 and £500 because it will be a sub-notebook probably based on an Atom processor with a 10" screen at the most.
However, if in a couple of years I replace my main laptop (Asus convertable tablet, see specs to the left), I'd be looking at spending another £1,000 like I did on this one. Although I might end up building a desktop instead then because i'd have a little mobile thing.
These mini-laptops aren't a complete replacement for me.
Similar to funkstar really.
I've spent over £1000 on my last two laptops, one very recenlty (M1330) so my next one will probably be something like the 9" Eee but I would spend £1000+ replacing my M1330.
My M1330 is expected to be a desktop replacement while at uni, but portable enough and classy enough to take to meetings etc.. The M1330 and Vaio SZ are the only laptops that really do this imo.
What I'm really looking for is an ultra portable at a throw away price which the Eee offers.
I've gone for £300 to £499 because I don't mind spending extra on something that offers more than the Eee 9" ..throw away or not
Well the one i'm using now cost me just under 1200 last year early october, and now i can get pretty much the same thing for 800, which is just...the way things go with technology. So no doubt it'll be the same kind of situation later.
i don't mind paying the extra money again on the next one as long as i get something decent, good slick build, and i'm happy with it.
Definitely under £300.
I'm not really a fan of laptops anyway, due to usually being able to get better specced towers cheaper than most laptops.
I'm going to get a laptop for the times I am away from home and can't bear to be without a PC for long (what can I say, I'm an addict!), but I always stick to the budget I set myself (this applies to everything, not just computers, so I'm a cheapskate at heart) - I know what I'm willing to pay, and won't deviate from it.
I just spent £600 on a Phillips 11NB5800.
Philips 11NB5800 ultraportable laptop review - PC Advisor
Its a dual core jobbie with those ultra low voltage core 2 duo's at 1.2ghz, 2gb RAM, 160gb HD, DVD-RW and 11.1" widescreen 1366@768. Its simply teeeeeny and I love it, runs vista great as well with all the funky areo stuff. I think £600 is great value to be honest.
edit : oh yeah and it hits nearly 5 hours battery life!

Paid just over £1400 for my last one. Dell XPS 1710, 1900 x 1200 lovelyness
Although it's a little slow now on the newer games. I'm just hoping it's gonna run Conan and warhammer online ok.

Hard and it is heavy dirty and mean
Are we classing these Eee and other UMPCs as laptops? I ask as they're closer to handhelds than what would traditionally be a laptop.
In any case, I'm pretty much the same as Funkstar and staffsMike as the next portable computer I'd buy would be of the Eee ilk. I'd still like to purchase something a bit more powerful too and with my dev testing requirements it'd have to be a MacBookPro so I'd be looking at anything upwards of £1000. Damn, I need two votes
£500-£699
Whilst my next computer, once I have a real job, will be a powerhouse, I imagine that when it comes to replacing this dear laptop, I would likely go for something similar.
Gaming in bed is simply too awesome, as is being able to take many games with you when travelling and play they reasonably
Of course, if I had the money, a more portable UMPC type thing would rock, but that is more of a dream than a real plan. I'd want to be able to still afford my other hardware plans too.
Gaming in bed and playing in bed are two very different things
I'd do one and not the other personally
I don't think I will waste money on a tablet pc again... so <£500 for me
