yeah antihistamines are the way to go. a rash is basically just inflammation due to certain chemicals released by mast cells. antihistamines prevent this release and voila no rash or less...

i used a steriod cream, but can't find it to tell you the name.
found that dropping a few KG helped, and not using soap... and it's worth using a cream based suncream that will not dry your skin or take away the oils in your skin.
i had it for a couple of miserable weeks last year, and my doc in NZ recommended the above - just losing weight, changing suncreams and not using soap.
Steroids are a good anti inflammatory, but not too sure about using steroids on a long term basis without medical advise unless you know that the cream is of a very low dose. tablets or other sorts of use is definitely not advised unless you like or want the side effects associated with steroids.
i think there's been a lot of good suggestions so far, for me the best symptomatic relief would be the antihistamines over the steriod creams. why don't you (OP) try them out one by one and see what helps. can't really say what you could do to prevent it as i've haven't learnt any of that yet, just basic treatment
i did read that a hot shower and something to scrub yourself with can help unblock the pores that have swolen up, it did help me when i was away and got it, almost ruined the bloody holiday for me!
stevie lee's suggestion seemed to work for me too - I stayed out the sun for a while and the rash has all but gone now, just a bit of dry skin left and that's on the way out too.
Saying that, it has been a bit cooler over the past week so that probably helped too, took 2-3 days for my rash to go. Now that the sun's back out, it might start up again. I'm trying not to resort to medication until I get desperate.
I end up taking a course of antihistamines most years as that seems to aleviate the symptoms. That tends to take care of the heat rash for the rest of the summer then.
hooray - gald i could help. hexus cures alot of things doesn't it?
glad i'm not the only one with a wierd body immune system type thing..
if anything like this happens again i would think it's best to ignore it, if you don't know its there in the first place then there's no problem.. right?
