    VBScript

    I'm teaching myself VBS...

As of the moment, I know one command "msgbox" which, whilst being fun, serves very little actual purpose.

Naturally - I'm assuming that VBS HAS a purpose...

If someone could find me a list of commands you can use it would be useful Alternatively, a tutorial or two would be nice, or you just posting here other commands that I could use.

No nasty links though. Having just writtin a short program I know EXACTLY what you can do with things like VBS should you be so inclined to do so.

    Re: VBScript

Is that a referal link you posted?

    That's not allowed on here.

So you want tutorials, but no links? erm how?

Your post doesn't make a lot of sense

sorry.. correction: I want tutorials, but no nasty links...

and no it's not a referral link - unless linking it to the thing I mentioned is a referral link O.o?

if so, I'll just remove the link.

    Re: VBScript

That link doesn't go anywhere except the MediaFire home page with the referer on the end of the URL. It certainally doesn't link to any software.

    Re: VBScript

It links to a download of the software.. to be precise.

And it's not really software either.. it's a VBScript, and a small and short one at that.
I made it as a test run for something then regretted it when I ran it.

"msgbox" command was... interesting... for about the first 5 clicks. Then the popups just got irritating.

I will correct my original post so it makes sense.

    Re: VBScript

I think the confusion is coming from the fact that the link takes you to your software because you've logged into MediaFire and have the cookie... For the rest of us it just takes us to the MediaFire front page, and thus your id on the URL makes it look like referral spam to earn that id money if we sign up or something, but from what your saying it sounds like you're just as confused about the whole thing as us.

The short version: The link only works for you, we can't see your files.

    Re: VBScript

Why not skip straight to something more profitable, useful and enjoyable, like a nice modern .NET language.

VBScript is like PHP - it's a bad language.

    Re: VBScript

    I agree with the above

Unless you have an actual reason to need to know a scripting language - eg to aid some funky AJAX stuff then you're probably better off learning something that has wider uses.

I'm biased towards C# and .net and I reccomend looking at them, being relativly easy to pick up and having loads of tutorials on the net (look at CodeProject. Free source code and programming help), but java isn't a bad thing to pick up (check out the sun website for some decent tutorials), or even javascript if you want to stick with scripting for now...its better/more useful than VBS imo

I would stay away from VB in general tbh, it doesn't teach you basic programming, it teaches you bad habits.

Check you the Scripting Guy from Microsoft, has a new script almost everyday for admin with good explination on how they work. I find it useful anyway.

    Re: VBScript

hmm.. so something like java/javascript is better to learn?

I can probably dig myself a few books out on them

Just that I don't have anything on VBS... hence the ask for general websites. Will remove link.

    Re: VBScript

The only use I ever found for VB was VBA or Visual Basic for Applications.

This applied to MS Access is pretty handy for adding a bit of business logic to databases. That said I would never use Access for anything other than rapid prototyping (perhaps) anymore.

As was suggested, Java is a better language to get into. VB is so high level it will give you both a false view of what programming is like and seriously bad programming habbits.

    Re: VBScript

Having learnt VBS at uni and used it for several years developing CMS and ecommerce solutions, I'd advise you to stay well away and dedicate yourself to learning something useful like Java, or anything within the .Net architecture, probably C# as it has the greatest commercial demand at the moment (of the .Net languages). Get yourself some SQL exposure and you'll find yourself in great demand.

    Re: VBScript

Bit of a shortage of c# developers too, and its very much like Java so not a bad language to start with either.

    Hmm OK.. thanks all

I will go dig out all the books my local library has on c# and java...

Is Javascript worth learning? Is there a difference between JavaScript and Java?

    Re: VBScript

They are competely different as the name suggests JavaScript is a scripting language, used for web programming mostly.

Java is a programming language and better to learn and is probably the better one to commit your time to first if you are serious about learning how to program though. Scripting is usually very straight forward and can be learned quite quickly though if you want to have a play with web programming

    Re: VBScript

I'm a total VBS noob and could do with a simple script to automate a fix I need for my systems whenever I install. This seemed a good thread to ask.

Can someone suggest a way to do this?

    1. Click Start -> Control Panel -> Internet Options.
    2. Click “Security” tab, mark the zone “Local intranet”, and click the “Sites” button.
    3. Un-tick “Automatically detect intranet network”
    4. Tick “Include all local (intranet) sites not listed in other zones” and “Include all network paths (UNCs)”

Ideas or scripts would be great.. thanks
