Can I take a hard drive on holiday?

I've taken a complete m-atx system, wrapped in a towel for a bit of protection, and lobbed in my suitcase before 13 hour flight to Malaysia too (That's where I'm living for a while)

Almost every flight I take (maybe 20+ a year) I have laptop and mobile HDD with me too.

Totally not an issue.

Out of literally tons of flights I think I have been asked once to switch on the lappy, thats' it.

When going offshore in the UK, you are asked to switch your laptop on and off to make sure it is a real laptop and not just a bundle of electronics and explosives

I have also been asked to switch on MP3 players and cameras just to make sure.

But then they also don't usually scan bags, it is a hand search. They are more likely looking for drugs and alcohol.
