    Wish me luck

I've got what is termed as a Personal Development Reciew at work tomorrow, essentially so I can sit down for 2 hours. here what my boss has to say and at the end of it find out how much of a payrise I'm getting (from nothing to 6%)

The last time I had one of these 2 years ago, he got very nosy and very personal, this time if the same happens again then I shall walk out.

You should see the amount of paperwork I have to fill out before I have the thing tomorrow too, have come home with half a rain forrest to fill out, quite literally I have things to answer like what has gone well for me in the last year ? What hasn't gone well for me ?

I really do hate things like this, would sooner just be told how much of a payrise I'm going to get (I know I probably won't be getting one for some reason) rather than spin it out like that. What can be said in those 2 hours could in my mind be easily put into half an hour.

    Re: Wish me luck

I hate those things, they are far too personal with the questions they ask you. I find it completely unreasonable that they should expect you to tell them such things.

You are at work to do your job, as long as it is done well and on time then that should be the end of it and your employer should keep their nose out. Work is work and that is the end of it.

Utter joke, feel very sorry for you.

    Re: Wish me luck

    Only 2 hours? You're lucky.

With the amount of paperwork I'm surprised if it even matters what he says to you - usually they can rant as much as they like, but it's only their written statement that counts and you can probably take that to union/tribunal if you think that's unfair.

    Re: Wish me luck

Pff, up till now in our '30,000+ employees but shall remain un-named company' we got a personal performance review session every six months. They just changed it this year to every 8 weeks, and it lasts about 2 hours or so.

It's part of corporate culture, you just have to suck it up and get on with it. Believe me, having to put up with a personal review and a bit of corporate probing session to make sure that I fit in with the rest of the drones' enthusiasm to achieve 'world class' (world ASS more like) just so that I can qualify for a decent above RPI payrise that many other industries don't get is hunky dory with me.

Sounds scarily like what I've recently gone through.

Still, I survived more or less intact, so it shouldn't be too bad

    Re: Wish me luck

I guess how it goes all depends on how much of a numpty your boss is.

I have had quite a few of these things and they all went fine, apart from a couple with a guy who thought he was God's gift to... well, everything. He was an utter David Brent.

He told me at one point that I should be more like him, so that I could get "nice things" like he had. Bearing in mind his prized possession was an Escort with neon yellow stripes, I had to fight to avoid the giggles. He also made points about how he wasn't there to be liked (which was true, everyone detested him) but how he was there for results (which was untrue, as no-one would do a thing for him, and figures showed that).

First review I had, I stuck to my guns, told him what he was wrong about, and got a paltry raise. Next time, I just listened, smiled, nodded enthusiastically, frowned when necessary, and played along. He gave me a decent raise that time, as he thought that I was now, as he put it "getting it". Eeeeeeeejit.
