Anyway, enough of I Know My English History top trumps.
I shall return to my Simon Schama DVDs.

Well that's that sorted. So what we need is a French/German/Norweigian TV channel so everyone can understand it?
Ah no, because of the natural inclination of language to change over time, the likelihood of anyone in England being able to understand the original English from 10 centuries ago is remote. Yes, some words will remain largely the same, but I would imagine a vast majority have changed.
Words USED to be written how they sounded... leading to words like.. well can't really think of any offhand...
Words like "Water" come from the Celtic/English
Words like "obvious" come from the Latin/Italian
Of course, we also have a bundle of place names... and I'm not entirely sure the above two words are correct...
And Stewart - I enjoy knowing random stuff like this... especially when it's in History.. favourite subject all the way

This is true. When I was at school I didn't give a monkies about English history. Didn't know a Norman from a Dave.
Then a few years ago I got this sudden urge to learn all there is to learn.
Simon Schama DVDs, Wikipedia, even those book things.
English history is the greatest story ever told.
When I'm sad, I simply read of the great slaughter we inflicted on the French at Crecy, or Agincourt, and all is well with the world again.
Athelson was Alfred's son and Ethelred's father. Both were unready prehaps? Might be wrong about Athelson though... he might have been the Viking.
And the Chinese invaded about 3-4 years ago... and they carry on shipping more and more people into the country. Bit like the Pakistanis, the Afghanistanis and all the other eastern european/north african/third world countries.
I think the Chinese probably have more illegal immigrants on our soil than the entirity of the Viking army ever put on our soil combined....
Civil Wars are amusing to read about...

Well, (top trumps mode) Unready means bad council, doesn't it?
Ethelred the badly advised, in other words.
Not unready as in the enemy turned up and he was still kiping.
I've not heard of any other Saxon King called the Unready, so this Athelson bloke either half inched someone elses name, or he was 'the Viking'.
Must be getting the Viking "king" and the Saxon ones mixed up then... or simply misremembering.
There WAS an Athelson though, at about that time (give or take 50 years) so maybe next generation?
I thought Athelson was the one who had long hair...
And unready can be taken either way, as it provides a sense of humour to history, albeit an unintentional one.

Elthelred, the Vikings are here, quick!
The Vikings! ****! I've not even got my trousers on yet! Doomed, we are doomed!
Is Stewart a Scots name?
Erm... might be.*
I'm English though.
* - Yes, but shut up about it.
Look out, here comes trouble...TheAnimus has arrived and he is not happy (because he never is)
Yes, its my families dark secret.
I, a proud and noble Englishman come from a long line of Scots.
I was born in England, as was my Dad, but his Dad and all my other ancestors were Scottish. As Scottish as you can get, for as far back as you can look.
I'm not proud.
