    Japan.

I read somewhere that Japan was the closest you can get to visiting another planet without leaving Earth. Once I'd read that I wanted to go there.

Anyone been there on holiday, or even better lived \ worked there for any amount of time?

    If so, spill the beans.

Is it all people buzzing around at 100 miles an hour, plastic and neon, people dressing up as purple haired anime characters, and of course hiding from... GODZILLA!

    Or is that just Tokyo?

Whats it like a few hours outside the cities? What the Japanese version of Cheshire like?

I wont end with some Engrish, its so crass.

Well, maybe a touch of All Your Base Are Belong To Us.

    Re: Japan.

Nick told me that when he first got off the plane it was like being cut off from his own civilisation becase nothing is readable....everything is totally alien.

    Does that count?

I'm Indian, and visiting India is still a culture shock! At least, it was when I was 11.

    Re: Japan.

Ive always wanted to go over there, trouble is to see everything I want to/go everywhere id at least need 3 weeks and an awful lot of money!

Language barrier is a problem although in the majority of areas there will at least be 1 person that speaks english, and if not again the vast majority are keen and helpful and will try there best to help.

    Re: Japan.

Japan is very different in terms of being a 1st world country. I reckon many other
2nd and 3rd world countries would be far more alien and strange. When being
there it feels very different yet at the same time strangely familiar.

Personally I dont think there are many really amusing and weird things there,
generally you would have to purposely seek them out.

As with anywhere I things are not easy to explain and are often complex.
I cant imagine going there without basic Japanese language skills and cultural
    knowledge.

    Re: Japan.

But the English way is to go to places without basic language skills and cultural knowledge.

We ask for pie and chips, if they don't understand, we shout PIE AND CHIPS, if they still don't get it, we conquer it in the name of Queen Elizabeth and enslave its people.

Don't forget a flag! Can't capture anywhere without sitcking a flag on it.

I've always wanted to visit Japan to experience the cutlure, but I'm not sure what to do if I got there other than eat sushi and drink saki.
