    The art of disappering

I'm wandering how hard it would be to disapper. To still live in UK in a different place but with all trace of who you are gone.

If you have paid of all your depts and are debt free and the police are NOT after you, how hard would it be just to disappear and how would you do it?

My next Thread will be how to kill quietly and where to hide the body.

No, Noooooooo. Just an honest question. And remember, faking your own death is not illegal if you you are not gaining anything from it.

    Who are you disappearing from?

You can change your name, etc, and do a passable job of disappearing from family and friends, but there are easier ways of escaping them, like stop washing.

To escape the government, then you have to be prepared to break the law and use false documents for work, etc. And if you're prepared to do that then you have to have something to get away from.

Perhaps the act of actually vanishing isn't illegal if you make no gains but for all intents and purposes it WILL become illegal. In order to start totally afresh and be untraceable (I really don't think in todays society it is possible if you stay in the UK) you'd need to assume a new identity. If you didn't want to be found you could never apply for anything in your old name and so you'd need to take up a false one which would mean you were then applying for jobs, credit etc. under a false identity. Which is fraud. Which is illegal.

I suppose if you ditched all bank accounts, family, friends, phones, contact information and then didn't bother getting new stuff you could kind of do it. You could live hundreds of miles away, do casual jobs for cash in hand payment only (and if nothing is ever declared to the inland revenue your straight away back in illegal territory) and live in a b&b forever. Or rent a flat for cash with a false name. Assuming they didn't ask you to prove who you were ever, which is damned unlikely.

In short: Very hard/impossible in my opinion.

Illegally; you'd have to find the contacts.

    Legally; Give up now.

You can change your name and drop all bank accounts and contact with the outside world, but the act of changing your name means that you can be tracked through that I think.

I have a feeling that they record what your original name WAS and then what it IS now.

Maybe you should buy your own island and hide there?

Yep, change of legal name occurs by deed poll and the documents can be found (with original and new name) at the national archives at Kew, Surrey.

One thing I must make clear. I am NOT talking of anything illegal. The faking your own death thing was a joke.

It's not to escape debt or the police.

I heard on Radio 1 they had a Barryoke thing. A karioke thing sung by people called barry.
A woman changed her name by deed poll to Barry so she could enter the cometition.

It just got me thinking. Is it that simple? If you have the a stalker you want to get away from, is that the only thing you would need to get away?

However, of course, if the place were to suddenly burn down accidentally just after you'd done that...

And computer records were mysteriously stolen..

But you said you wanted to keep it legal, so it won't happen.

Would you just want to start a new life apart from old family/friends, or apart from the government as well? I'm fairly certain the latter is on the line of impossible, the former, you could just turn all you assets into cash, withdraw all monies from all bank accounts, chabge your name and relocate and start again. And hope that no-one in the previous life knows how the deed poll works

Of course.. you could always repeat several times.

People only follow a paper trail so far.

    Re: The art of disappering

Changing your name is actually easier than that. You can change your first name just by notifying everyone who has your name on file, your bank, drivers licence, etc.

Your surname has to be done by deed poll.

There are easier ways to avoid a stalker, but the reality is it depends not on how good you are at running, but how good the stalker is at chasing.

    Re: The art of disappering

Although some skill at hiding is required.

I can (have tried, it worked) track some people down to 2nd line of address (village/town) and locate their computer wherever it may be (although this isn't always accurate.. I'm currently about 200 miles out on my own computer.. despite being within 5-10 miles of some other people)

Those that try to hide take me longer, but they can't try all that well so I don't know what'd happen if someone really tried to hide.

Public records be very good atm.

If you work for the government or for a local authority you're automatically listed online. The electoral role be available for common persual for a lil money as well.

Private records are even better. You can find them under any seat on your local bus service or in the hands of your local terrorist outfits

    Re: The art of disappering

In theory you do not need a deed poll to change your name. You can just decide to do it and use your new name from then onwards, as long as it is not for illegal purposes such as to escape prosecution or other crimes or punishments associated with your previous identity. Also in the current police state of requiring ID for everything you may find it hard to get credit etc in your new identity.

Although that is not the question. To live a new life would not be hard, pay in cash earn in cash. Live 'under the radar', so to speak. Don't earn enough to pay income tax and manage to live of it? It would be hard, but I reckon it would be doable just about without breaking any laws. The only one you would struggle with is Council Tax I think. Well off the top of my head. I'm sure there are more.
