Chinooks are indeed awesome, not so much though, when your directly under the flight path, and regularly fly over the house a mere 200 feet above during the night, and can be alot lower during the day!

Also not sure how much faith I have in the chains holding the land rovers/artillery guns underneath. Snap and the house could be taken out by a couple of tonnes of landy!

That way they all talk to each other and the helicopter can basically look after itself.
    repost:

I used to live in Yeovil whilst working at Westlands (Wastelands ) and we used to get Apaches, EH101s, Gazelle, Lynx, Sea King fly over the house quite a lot. Whilst going up the A303 I'd quite often see harrier pilots practising along the road low enough and slow enough to clearly see the pilots.

The helicopter test pilots were always out in something or another over the airfield at Westlands and I used to buy a baguette and paper from the shop and wonder past the hangers and airfield to waste a bit of time. One time I was aware of an Apache doing a hover manoeuvre so I watched it as I walked and had the rather disturbing sight of the gun following me as I walked. Obviously the pilot was testing it and using me as a target. I gave a nervous little wave and the helicopter then bowed it's nose up and down so I knew that he knew that I knew he was looking at me!

I'd hate to be on the receiving end of it.

I could probably look up some the LOWLER lifting equipment regulations, and go into the fact they are rated for way higher a load than they are ever subjected to, but I won't (and can't be arsed). Safe to say though, one isn't going to fall on your house any time soon.

That'll be a Merlin HC3. Something I may well be working on at the end of the year. Either that or the dreadful Pumas.

This is what happens when on the receiving end. It's the large warm area you can see after the person has been shot that shows the severity of the attack!

And this was the video I was talking about with the tree. The dialogue is funny as well!

Same here. Chinooks flying so low over our house that our windows and doors (including some internal doors!) shake! They are awesome, but the noise they make is terrible!

We've had a stealth bomber, replete with 4-fighter escort fly low over our house one summer's day.
I looked up and it took my brain a few seconds to register it wasn't an alien invasion - they're so massive and oddly shaped.

Re: We have had a visit at work from...

My missus works at a hospital that gets a lot of unfortunate folk delivered by Chinook. So she considers herself battle hardened to the noise.

We had an air display round these parts last week, and the Chinook went straight over our flat on it's practice run. The missus happily stood on the balcony while I made comments about it being noisy.

She called me a wuss, then promptly dived for cover when a Eurofighter went screaming over Now THAT is noisy. Crikey. We watched it flipping about the place for a while, gobsmacked.

When we went to the display itself the Chinook was awesome. There's an awful lot of talent involved in doing that sort of stuff I imagine. But again, the Typhoon stole the show. You could just see all the kiddies thinking "I wanna do THAT when I grow up"

We don't get anything as fancy as that, but we do get spitfires, hurricanes and lancasters every year doing the rounds from the air shows Used to get red arrows alot, but they moved their flight path
It is quite cool though, just standing in the garden, look up, and see a formation of spitfires and a lancaster flying over

What kind of place do you work at to get one of those landing 'round the back of the unit?

Have to disagree there, it's cool, but in terms of aviation shots, I've seen better

Nice site. This picture is very good at showing how the shockwaves form as the aircraft passes through the transonic range.
