Small update for those interested: I've ordered a new 23" Cinema HD with the Mac Pro, and at the moment have an interested buyer for the 3-year 10 month old 23" display. An online site retailing the replacement CCFLs has advised that they take 4-6 bulbs!!
The G5 was sitting at the local Apple agents and someone there has managed to scratch and dent the case badly. A couple strong letters (threatening to immediately cancel the Mac Pro order worked like magic!) and the company is replacing the enclosure completely and all the internal bits will be transferred across once it arrives from Singapore.
...this is one way to handle the 'rusting' issue I should receive the Mac Pro/new display after the 14-17th.
Bit of 'holy' thread revival here. The Mac Pro arrived last night and I picked it up this morning as they had no 'vehicle' to deliver it on a public (religious) holiday. Unfortunately, the supplier in Singapore was out of stock of the 23" Cinema displays so this will only be arriving around the same time next week...
I have been sorting out and migrating my data all day. It currently has:
Bay1 - 320 GB (WD from Apple)
Bay2 - 250 GB Hitachi 'Deskstar'
Bay3 - Spinpoint 1TB
Bay4 - Spinpoint 1TB
...with 2x 1TB WD Studio attached storage. Right now I am setting thing up using my Plasma which is *not* easy as I have to be careful to ensure there is no burn in. Took this snapshot when testing VLC and the TOSLINK connection to my amp; 720p/AAC downloads are playing in 5.1 quite nicely
First impressions: as heavy as a G5 I'd wager. Opening it the cover for the first time well...looks just like advertised on the Apple site - no, seriously though - it is far cleaner and better laid out. The drive sleds are really great although one should be careful when removing a drive or else your fingers/nails/cuticles won't be happy; learned the painful way
I have not been able to do much apart from sort my data about, although generally it feels snappier and FAR FAR snappier when playing 720p clips. Will report next week once I get it properly hooked up to the display.
Got VUZE running the SWING UI Web interface, and that's making life a bit easier.

Looking good Mike! I bet you can't wait to get the monitor.
Not around too often!
Not around too often!
I thought I'd try and 'quantify' the performance of the system today and ran two tests.
The first was the Retouch Artists Photoshop Speedtest. The configuration of my system is 2x 2.8GHz Quad-core Intel Xeon (8xcores), 2GB RAM, 320GB main + 250GB scratch disk. Settings in Photoshop CS3 were 1x history, cache level x 4 as advised by the test README, with memory usage @ 100%.
Click the image above to see the results page and click on 'Mac Pro'. My machine completed it in 35.2s
The other test was Cinebench R10:
I guess the R10 release is not taking advantage of the 64bit platform or missed selecting something. Nevertheless, compare results here.Code:CINEBENCH R10 **************************************************** Tester : Michael de Silva (bsodmike) Processor : Mac Pro 2.8 GHz Quad-core Intel Xeon (8CX) MHz : 2.8 GHz Number of CPUs : 8 Operating System : OS X 32 BIT 10.5.5 Graphics Card : ATI Radeon HD 2600 OpenGL Engine Resolution : 1280x1024 Color Depth : Millions **************************************************** Rendering (Single CPU): 3203 CB-CPU Rendering (Multiple CPU): 17373 CB-CPU Multiprocessor Speedup: 5.42 Shading (OpenGL Standard) : 5475 CB-GFX ****************************************************
These are still preliminary tests, will see how it handles generally once the display arrives.

Bit of 'holy' thread revival here. Long story short, after much testing I managed to isolate the memory and decided to return the Mac to the agents here ~ this was on the 17th of November (I received it on the 12th of November).
Today, the 9th of December, I collected the replacement unit and something definitely seems to be different. For one, the machine is noiser than the previous one...the front fan stays on, after kicking in about 5 mins after a fresh power up. It also seems to be drawing 8A on idle (the other machine drew 11A) and the temps on idle are ~35-36degC compared to 41degC+...
Here are some screenshots of ripping a DVD to mattroska (MKV) format with Handbrake, (click to enlarge)
The resulting file was 2GB with both a AC3 and Dolby Digital track. The first pass took 22 mins and the final pass took 40 mins.
