    In defence of SecondLife

I know people call second life users losers and all, and Ive also replied in another thread regarding this, I do not agree, most of all I believe it is a forum to show off your creative side, where you can buy all sorts of clothes, in all colors, all designs, match them up, compliment with jewellery, hair styles, shades, shoes, everything and anything is customizable, you can show how you feel about a certain dress or look, for some people that is enjoyable.

You can be a developer, develop things, earn money, I do photography there in second life, and with this post, I am posting a few pictures for the non-users to get an idea, I love the photography, photograph avatars, make them look nice, make the photos look nice, direct them, tell them how to stand, what location, etc etc, Im trying to give you an idea of how it feels, I also create tatoos, which avatars wear, they can be worn like real tatoos, under your clothes, on any part of your body, its a good way to show it.

Meet people from around the globe, be friends, if it helps tho, I do make it a point to know people for their real life, rather than go for second life, so anyone who says, keep the real life out of second life, I dont really talk to them again. I have posted my picture in my profile there, so everyone can know who I am, how I look like, im an Asian, and ive said that in my profile, I have very nice friends from all over, US, UK, RUSSIA, and they are great people, not really losers, they work and in their free time, they come to relax and talk and have fun, below are the pictures of my avatar, its skin, its shape, its clothes, its eyes, its hair, everything, each and everything is chosen by me, and I take pride in it, it resembles me in real life, albeit not a very close resemblance, but is that important? not as long as people know who the real me is and how am I, no fantasies, no lies, no hiding behind the avatar, just playing like a game, and for that, I think its one of the best things to happen to online gamers.

this one is with two very nice lady friends, who, look quite a bit like their avatars, if thats what you are wondering

I have taken all these photos and several others, some with other themes etc, you are simply in a 3D environment, you can pan and scan the camera, move it in any direction, choose a view, like a director, and then snap away, edit the picture, and there you go...I feel great doing that and creating awesome looking pictures! I just love it, I go to second life once every week, or every 2 weeks atleast, chat with people have fun, do my thing, hope you appreciate the pictures, and understand what i meant.

EDIT: Just to add that, being an Asian, hanging out with friends from around the globe, expands my social horizons in a way, we all voice together, that way we all get to know bout each others countries and cultures and learn alot, by voicing with them, I learn how they speak, how they talk, their attitude, and that helps me in real life, being here with you guys on hexus, and having friends on second life from the UK, I feel confident enough to come to UK and hang out with people, I wont feel weird, uncomfortable or out of place, is that not a great thing?

EDIT: Just to brag, in the pictures above, in one of them my shirt says s3x and in them im also wearing a custom designed chain that says H, my initial, I designed the whole thing myself, even though its nothing spectacular from the design point of view, its just an H,but being able to get something the way you want it and show it how you want it, I think its a great show case of your ideas and creativity.

    Re: In defence of SecondLife

With regard to the way you use it, I don't think it's any worse than most of us using a forum or people using Myspace/Facebook etc..

What you worry about is the people that are so deeply immersed into things like this that they have really lost touch with reality.

The problem you will find with a lot of people, and I know a lot of people like this, is that they simply can't comunicate confidently without a PC inbetween them and it is just really sad (both meanings of the word).

Using it for a bit of fun or something to do when you are a bit bored is fine, but cybersex.. marriage and divorce.. get a bloody REAL life.

    Re: In defence of SecondLife

Yes, but I believe like any other thing in life, its a balancing exercise, there is nothing wrong if you do it while keeping a balance, ill quote a post from another thread regarding this:

Even so, I'd much rather spend that time with people face to face. With those things there are always elements missing that are part of real life. I would also rather get out and do things, hell I'd rather go out clubbing. And for me, that says alot.

Taking the step of creating a 'virtual you' is a step backwards in the social world in my oppinion.
I think this is a wrong way, even here, arnt we all posting, dont we all feel like a family here? we arn't face to face, hell we dont even do IM's, its posting simply, not even voice, yet we do feel a relation? pride? feeling of a family. Should someone come and say we all are losers, why dont we get real friends and say all this to them rather than post here with people we cant even see like a real friend everyday?

as for creating a virtual you, its not wrong, unless you portray it to be the only you!...what i mean is that you are in everything you create, you write a book, you are in the book, everything you do is a representation of who you are, just because in this case its an imitation of a human being, doesnt mean its lame, it is only wrong if you hide the real you and hail you creation as the real deal, if you forget that, then you are wrong, and that is in no way reason enough to call users of secondlife losers, or second life itself as a waste or crap, atleast in my humble opinion!

    What are you talking about?

They spend their days working, and when they get some free time they go on second life to relax? How can you possibly conclude that they don't have a proper job? I think you're just jumping to conclusions instead of actually reading what you are quoting.

I didnt get you SiM, im saying, there are people who work and when they are free, they play the game for an hour or two to relax and talk to some friends without the hassle of going out of the house and traveling etc.

and how do you like my photos?

Erm, i dont use myspace, but if you are talking about angles in the photos, its nothing specific, you can pan the camera anyway in 3d and choose a view, its totally controllable, I just use the strait up angle for profile photos when people ask, the 3rd pic has a different take, second life itself plays like a 3rd person view, you view your avatar from behind, walking around n all, for photos, you have to pan the camera, bring it to the front, zoom in, out, left right etc...you can give it a try, its fun..but the problem is with creating avatars, not to brag but my avatar is like one of the best looking you would find there, so what it means is that it came to look like this after a lot of hardwork, creating a shape, which means, creating the shape of everything, from your legs to your lips and chin and forhead etc...its not complex though, the interface allows that pretty easily, but then choosing a skin, the skins have variations, facial hair, etc etc, skin tones, textures, the high texture ones, like mine, cost more, then clothes, hair, they all have different quality levels, better textures, better styles, neatly done, cost more. This avatar of mine has a complete wardrobe, for every occasion lol, the whole thing has cost me around 85quid as of now, but now i dont need to buy nething nemore.
