We wouldn't do too badly in bringing forward building nuclear coal fired power stations bearing in mind that a huge amount of our power generating capacity will go offline within the next 10-15 years. Britain is in serious danger of having blackouts in the very near future because we haven't invested in new power stations.

The biggest problem with wind power is that it's unreliable and therefore you need massive coverage to compensate for the bits that aren't generating due to lack of wind. That makes it inefficient and therefore expensive.

Agreed, iranu. The problems will be planning permission and the nimbyism in the court of public opinion. But those problems won't go away. The real question is whether enough progress could be made on things like nuclear power stations fast enough to help with the economy. If Darling is right, we'll be starting to come out of it in 6 or 7 months. I wish.

We need to be getting right on with those programs, though, and that's despite the current mess, not because of it.

Saracen had a short post... are you ill?

Anyway, I'd say that it's a great idea. There's one problem with it.. You said that the government would be responsible for it. And we're in England. 10 times the cost, 6 times the build time and we'll probably just scrap it half-completed....
