I was with you until the comma. The percentage most likely vary, and unless we have very different definition of 'poor', the US make a rather poor example IMO.

Some people spend hundreds on tickets to pop concerts. I sure wouldn't.

Some spend thousands on holidays. Once your two or three weeks are over, all you have are memories. At least with a nice watch, you have a nice watch for years .... and one that'll still be worth a good chunk of what you paid for it and, who knows, may end up worth more than you paid for it. Demand is a funny animal.

Some people spend a fortune on PCs with willy-waving specs. Fine, if it's what they want to spend their money on, but personally, I'd rather have the Rolex than a cutting edge PC ..... and I don't want a Rolex.

We all have a discretionary spend, and spend it on things that rock our boats. I've spent more on camera gear than most people would, and on books, CDs, etc. To me, both the camera gear and books etc were value for money, but I'm sure some people would think it's a waste of money. Not to me it wasn't, and it was, after all, my money.

A Rolex isn't what I'd spend £1000+ (and maybe plus a LOT) .... but some people do, and if it's what they like, it ain't a waste to them.
Saying someone has more money than sense isn't necessarily and insult unless they don't have much money.
For instance, a very sensible person that has a net worth of £400,000,000 spending £10,000 on a Rolex is certainly not being stupid. In fact, doubling that to get something that gives them 1% more pleasure out of it is not stupid. They still however have more money than sense simply due to the huge amount of money they have.
If we go down the scale, say someone that gets £250k pa spending £10,000 on a watch is still certainly not stupid. However they have still demonstrated they have more money than sense as spending that kind of money on a watch when you get paid that kind of money is less sensible.
Going further down the scale, someone on £50k spending that on a watch is only not an idiot if they have purchased it as an investment and are prepared to lose money on it like any other investment.
Below that anyone that spends £1000-£10,000 on a watch is a fool and therefore has more money than sense. You can get a better ROI from investing your money elsewhere.

    See above.
