Stuck with a networking question :(

Guys, i hope someone can point me in the right direction here because i am completely stuck

An application running on computer A want to send a message to an application running on computer B. To do this, the message needs to be sent sent from computer A to a server, through the Internet to another server and then passed to the recipient computer B.

    My question is:

What protocols are needed at each stage from

Computer A through an Ethernet LAN to a server
From a server via routers over the Internet to another server
And through a dial up connection to the recipient computer B

how often is this data sent? If its not often can you not just dial from computer A right into computer B?

i really don't get the point of the question?

Is this just ment to see if you know TCP/IP is for InterNetworking where as IPX isn't?!?

Re: Stuck with a networking question :(

    Just TCP/IP

edit: or possibly UDP if you're happy with stateless / non guarenteed delivery...

Your dial up host will get a (probably DHCP) IP address so it should all be good.

One application on a computer wants to send a 'rather long message' to another application on another computer. It is just a one off message.

    Cheers boredom

I think it is TCP/IP as you say, rather than UDP due to it being a longer message that would be packet switched.

Apex, its for one question i have as part of a computing assignment.

Re: Stuck with a networking question :(

Could have sworn this came up in one of my cisco exams, but anyway as stated simple answer is TCP/IP ( depends how deep the people asking the question want you to go )

Re: Stuck with a networking question :(

From Computer A to the Lan Server

    Layer 2 protocols

    Ethernet

    Layer 3 protocols

IPv4 / IPv6 (depending on how the network is setup)

    Layer 4 protocols

    TCP / UDP

    Layer 7 protocols

    DNS

From a server via routers over the Internet to another server

    Layer 1 protocols

    ADSL

    Layer 2 protocols

    Ethernet
    PPPoE
Frame Realy (if over leased line)

    Layer 3 protocols

IPv4 / IPv6 (depending on how the network is setup)

    Layer 4 protocols

    TCP / UDP

    Layer 7 protocols

    DNS

And through a dial up connection to the recipient computer B

    Layer 1 protocols

ITU V-Series eg V90 or ISDN

    Layer 2 protocols

    PPP

    Layer 3 protocols

IPv4 / IPv6 (depending on how the network is setup)

    Layer 4 protocols

    TCP / UDP

    Layer 7 protocols

    DNS

Or you could just say TCP/IP.

Now I could be miles out on this one as its off the top of my head so I would look into it a bit more but I hope this helps a bit. The question is a little open ended really.

    ps

I haven't added any Cisco protocols at all.
