Young Kids ARE affected by what they see on TV

My litte lad is 20 months old. Walking/toddling, he ca't run yet, not talking except for the initial part of the odd word. Still crawls occassionally, falls over a lot, sleeps for 2 hours at lunctime etc.

I say that all so that you non-parents understand how young he is.

Sair has a Wii. She plays tennis on it. She had used it for less than 1 hour, before he grabbed hold of his little pretend frying pan, stood in front of the TV and literally waved it around!

They understand everything at this age.. so caution people... caution. I know many of you know this from your own lives, but many (mysef incuded) disbelieved some of the hype surrounding computer games.

I mean.. of all his toys, he grabbed the one that was the right shape.

1 week later, he now grabs the same frying pan and switches Wii on!

    Caution people... caution!

Lowe... what's your little lad like on this kinda thing?

I Have a similar thing going on with my little lad atm, i play on Fifa09 on the 360.
Now if my son sees my controller he goes and switches my Xbox on and shout butball
and they waits for the "EA SPORTS" and laughes his head off saying EA EA EA,

Sits down with the controller on his knee and waits for it to come on.

He was 2 a few days ago

Re: Young Kids ARE affected by what they see on TV

The bairn has always watched me on the PC and the consoles for years and never once bothered to play on them or ask to. He watches me move the mouse and use the keyboard when on the PC and just doesn't have the interest, but when I bought the DS he was constantly looking at it, using it, wondering how to use the stylus etc. Now he is 5 and has his own DS and a handful of games etc but all he is interested in these days is Ben 10 lol constantly on it when he has finished his homework.

Going by the logic of this thread, we should give little children Tetris to play, their rooms should be spotless by level 9.

Wouldn't they just try and fit stuff neatly on top of each other, expecting it to disappear?

Wow, it seems that people have been 'busy' last year

Since I can't be too bothered to find them all: Congrats to everyone soon to be a parent, and commiserations to the guys who'll probably have less fun time

    5?

    Homework?

Good grief, the most school expected me to do as a 5 year old was read a book with my mum! I think we started homework in year 6 and laughed heavily when we were told that they were bringing it in for all the years below us.

Re: Young Kids ARE affected by what they see on TV

Similar sort of story I guess, my son is few weeks younger than Zak's, but he's just as transfixed by the TV. My wife and I learned quickly that Daddy playing GTA4 whilst little en is about was a *bad* thing. He didn't go murdering prostitutes or steal the car, but did have issues sleeping for a week or so. He has no comprehension of what's going on, but I think the sound troubled him to be honest. No surprises there but I didn't consider the effect that a decent home cinema might have.

On a more warming note, my father lives abroad and we stay in touch via Skype. Little en often sits with me whilst I chat to my dad, and he now recognises that the person on the laptop screen is my dad, and will smile and wave.

Oh - and he loves the Sonic Unleashed demo. He absolutely urinated himself laughing watching that!

How about an interactive encylopedia and oxford dictionary for the DS? Surely that will be fun and educational

Reading, spellings, phonics, maths and story telling all part of his homework throughout the week. Luckily he is at that stage where he enjoys it, not looking forward to it in a few years time when all you hear is "I can't be bothered"
