    Anyone here?

Ever been to the Arctic Circle?

I was just wondering what the weather was like there as apparently we've got arctic conditions here in the UK....

I was under the impression if was well bloody cold up there but if -1oC and 3 inch of snow is the norm then maybe I've been rather harsh in my opinion of global warming scientists....

    Re: Anyone here?

I'm off to canada on the 13th for a fortnight, now there it's been around -20c every day, for quite some time. When I speak to my friends out there they do think we're a bit weird when it snows.

    Re: Anyone here?

Yep. The UK is absolutely pathetic in terms of dealing with the pitiful amount of snow that occasionally falls. Not quite the arctic circle but parts of japan see 4m + of snow every winter. And it's beautifully powder like stuff that's insane fun to board on

I remember when the heating didn't work you still went to school and wore a coat in class. They only sent us home when the snow was so deep that only a couple of teachers showed up, and that one year when the council managed to cut through the gas, water and electricity supplies in the space of half an hour.

    Re: Anyone here?

Whilst I do agree that we're a bit crap in the main, there's a few things which stops the UK from coping well when it snows.

    1) Quite a few people don't live anywhere near where they work. In years gone by people lived a lot closer to their place of employment, therefore bad conditions didn't have the same impact as they do now. Crawling to work at 15mph when you work 100 miles away isn't worth leaving the house for.

    2) Conditions have generally been mild for the last 10 years or more, and so newer drivers aren't as 'ready' for these conditions as those of us who learned to drive when winters were winters.

    3) Because lets face it - it's only snowy for about 1 week a year, there's little point in us investing in snow tyres or chains.

So - whilst other countries may point and laugh, we do have some fairly valid reasons if you ask me.

    Re: Anyone here?

Wonder how many school run mums are scared to go out in there softroaders, or have gone out expecting them to be able to drive normally...

Spotted a few people this morning that obviously hadn't had any snow driving experiance

I've put my dad and the Shogun on standby for rescuing me and Dizz later from the car park, it was a bit treacherous earlier so I have no idea what it's gonna be like later!

But yes, there are some right plonkers on the roads this morning, you DONT take a roundabout at 30mph in the ice. it doesn't work...
