Still curious to see how i'll run myself down in debt this year though. I'm working over the summer to get everything i want before i go to uni so then i won't want anything when i'm over there

Excuse me? i dont drink (much!) or smoke or do drugs... u dont have to participate in those activities to run up a debt. What about general surviving like, electric, tv license, food and clothes? Also money to get home to see family... it all mounts up and while its good to go prepared with no debts and some money behind you, i think your being abit naive if u think your not gonna have any debt at all. Sure your parents may let u lean on them a little, but u need to be self sufficient as well.....

You gonna work your ass off every holiday u get 9-5 so u dont run into debt? Dont forget, 'work hard but play harder' uni is about having some fun as well, and relaxing....

I don't understand the concepts of uni whatsoever. Most people tell me that debt is run up due to partying.

I live at hime with my mum. I get half the normal loan, but i also get a hardship bursary cos my mum doesnt earn much more than £10k. I havent got time for a job doing the course i'm doing as i'm in uni 9-5 most days, sometimes later (we have 5pm lectures) and my weekends are spent doing assignments etc. I pay for food, half the electricity for the house (i use quite a bit), bus fare to and from uni, and anything else i might need, clothes etc. I dont go out much, and when i do, i can usually have a decent night out in the union for £10, so it's hardly expensive. Most of my money is spent visiting my bf every 3 weeks.

After all that, i'm £475 into my overdraft (of £1500) and there's still 4 weeks till my next loan installment. I'm also about £5k in debt to the student loans company.

Some of us dont have our parents holding our heads above the water. I'm lucky i've got no rent to pay at the moment, some of my friends are seriously struggling with money and they dont spend excessively either.

The myth of "parties every night" is exactly that... a myth... at least in my experience anyway. It may be true for freshers week, but after that, people are either too skint or too busy for parties.

Oh, and also, books cost a bomb! I'm just at the end of my 2nd semester, i went to waterstones on friday to get some books to help me with my course. 2 of which were compulsary texts, the other 2 were purely to help me understand certain parts of the course. The grand total for that visit was £105.97. Last semester, i payed over £150 for books.

University is is a very expensive experience, whether u're frugal with ur pennies or not. It's reality, you'll find that out soon enough.... or maybe you wont if mummy and daddy are there behind you...

part of the university experience is standing on your own two feet and for the first time in your life living in the real world... its scary, its downright terrifying, but its also exciting and fun. How do u expect to do that if you have your parents to run to everytime? mine would help me out if i was seriously in trouble, but not for everyday living, if i can afford to live in uni accomd then i can afford to the other stuff i want to do and if i cant, then i dont do them - at least thats the way i see it, so im sure they do ... its called living on a budget and handling money. Living like this at uni, getting yourself into debt making the mistakes, sets you up for life after, if you dont get that experience how u gonna manage when u graduate? are they gonna support you then as well?

I'm going to portsmouth to do computer science. The reason i don't know anything about uni's is because we don't have any over here so there's no chit chat about it.
