yeah, it could also be a base jumper with camera attached to helmet - hence a still from his video of the fall.
thats one thing thats always stumped me, the fact that skydivers wear helmets, surely if the worst comes to the worst then its fairly acceptable to assume that a helmet wont really prevent much in the way of injury when hitting the ground at 200m/s/s 9i think thats the right acceleration for terminal velocity...).
on the other hand i suppose it does keep the brain all neatly packaged up in one place preventing any splattering...

I would have thought leaving the aircraft - stepping into a 150mph slipstream would require head protection, especially if there is a risk of hitting wings / tailplanes / wheels. Also its quite common for skydivers to collide with each other during the free fall stage, often knocking each other unconscious.

Also if you get the 'flare' wrong on landing you will hit the ground with a fair old bump = head protection adviseable. And like you mention, theres the issue of colliding with ground objects.
