Well, I'm still waiting for some kind of help to first time buyers, as it is at the moment buying our first property is becoming an increasingly dim prospect.

If only the people would revolt....

I drink, not a great deal but I have been known to goto extremes, I dont smoke so that doesnt bother me as such..

The bit that does bother me is the fact that year after year motorists smokers and drinkers get hit again and again, hows about we stop giving money to people that find loop holes in imigration laws instead....

A reason why house prices are so high is because people lie about how much they earn, because you are allowed 3 times your salary. So if you earn £50K a year you can have a £150K house. How many peeps earn £50K a year?!?! Its just madness. They will be in trouble if interest rates go up.

I don't see why anybody's fussing about 1p a pint. When a pint of stella costs £2.50 anyway the increase is less than inflation.

And the fact that you can get mortgages based on joint income (in the past he went out and earnt the money, she stayed at home to look after the kids; today everybody goes out and works)

Oh, FFS, how about we stop allowing loopholes for our own corporate and/or rich tax-dodgers first? How about we stop slamming the poorest in society with indirect taxation like VAT and actually put up income tax while cutting VAT or reducing its scope? How about we do something about the exemption from NI for the richest in society? How about that? I'm sick of hearing this "blame the immigrants" crap. I drink, smoke and drive. The increase in duty upon cigarettes is in line with inflation, no more, no less. I have no problem with that. A penny a pint on beer? Oh, that's really going to break the bank - although given that duty rates are frozen on cider, spirits and sparkling wines I can always console myself with a nice malt...

"Has the chancellor hit motorists again?

Vehicle Excise Duty paid by every motorist is being frozen, and a 1.9p a litre rise in unleaded petrol and a similar rise on diesel will be delayed until September.

This will add about £30 a year to a motorist's annual fuel bill.

As expected, Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) will rise, by 2.4p a litre."

So not a huge amount there either.

It's a stable budget as far as I can see that doesn't really hit anyone hugely hard.

Nichomach, yes he has his motorists again, we pay more in petrol and taxes each year and yet the state of the roads gets no better, what exactly are we paying for?

Vehicle Excise Duty frozen, less than 2p a litre on unleaded and diesel, with that increase being deferred until September? Hardly seems like an excessive hit to me. If you want to complain about the roads in your area, why not take it up with the local council who are actually responsible for them? Or vote for a different council. If you want to complain about the national road network (motorways), given that every time I use the M6 there's work being done on it (OK, I don't like the temporary speed restrictions and/or lane closures, but that's pretty unavoidable) there IS money being spent on the roads. And on railways, which can provide an alternative. No, it's not perfect, but there is investment being made.

If the duty on Fags and Booze went down, we'd all stop buying it abroad, whether directly (by going in a car) or indirectly (by buying at a local store, whogoes in a van ) and the tax man would get his bit back.

    Did anybody realise that:

the Government is trying to MERGE Inland Revenue (income tax etc) and Customs and Excise (imports and stuff) and threrefore are gonna ditch lots and lots of jobs over only 4 years.

    Thats pretty special stuff.....why?

Cos most departments and bloated with systems that dont work, so we're gonna put some more in and ditch some staff, so you'll never be able to talk to a human ever again.

We've gotta live with it all.......

Hey....at LAST VAN DRIVERS are gonna get taxed on private use of their vans JUST LIKE CAR DRIVERS HAVE FOR YEARS....

way toomany building businesses and plumbers etc...use the works van at weekend, insured, taxed, fueled and serviced.....for NOTHING.....

so thats gonna raise some revenue....

My issue is the people who should be paying the highest tax can afford to hire accountants and pay the lowest tax. My personal view is that tax on cigarettes should have gone up more due to the pressure on our Health Service from smokers and smoking related problems. If you know its going to effect your health eventually you should be prepared to pay for it.

No i am not an anti smoker. I used to be one until two years ago. I believe in freedom to choose but everyone should pay for their choices e.g. if you know smoking is bad (it says so on the packet) you should pay the consequences monetary or physical.

Well, we already do. Cigarettes in the UK are, what, twice (or more) the price they are in, say, France or Spain, and that difference is accounted for purely by the duty imposed on them.

Agreed; although I know that our mob do use some smaller cars and have a policy to run all council vehicles on LPG. But that's my point; the state of the roads around a given area is the responsibility of the council for that area. Don't ask where your VED and petrol duty have gone, demand to know where the hell your council tax went.
