Why doe's everyone keep putting apostrophe's where the don't belong?

I always notice basic grammatical errors in forums, but tend to refrain from mentioning them. I think forums are quite informal and so some mistakes can go uncommented on, however mixing up forms of there, your, to, or ridiculously placed apostrophes should be acknowledged. It is evidence of declining educational standards. Many grammar rules are not that complicated to learn. Also the rise of texting, and word processing packages that fix mistakes automatically encourages laziness to develop.

Just to be a pedant... That should be abreviating not concatenating. The apostophe is there for the abreviation, the fact that you've concatenated the two words is incidental.

That'll teach me to post before the caffine has kicked in. I'm not usually that bothered, but this morning, around 4 or 5 of the 'New Posts' threads had dodgy apostrophes.

You only need an apostrophe when you are showing something is possessive:

Peter's shoes
Frank's aardvark

or when you are concatenating words together:

do not -> don't
have not -> haven't

and to further that, plural possession which is where most people go squiffy.

ie two gamers' keyboards

Isn't there a grammar rule about not putting commas in front of the word "but"? Or was that starting sentences with it? Also, is "there're" an acceptable concatenation? Don't recall actually ever seeing it written down anywhere.

I looked there're up. It's colloquial but acceptable.

I would've thought that you'd do it right, although the incorrectness could be to prove the point. It's still wrong even taking that into account though
