Re: Getting mugged at knife point.

Sorry to hear the OPs story, but to reitterate comments above you did the right thing.

I had a comedy knife point mugging in Reading a few years back - I only had a quid on me, nothing else, not even a wallet. The muggers didn't believe me and as I was emptying my pockets they heard a rustle in the bushes (I didn't). They then thought I had thrown my wallet in the bush and told me that if I didn't get it out they would stab me. Eventually after much looking in the bushes (all three of us!), they got the idea and ran off. Crazy.

Im very very impressed with the police on this occation. i have non stop phone calls and letters from the thames vally police and the nation transport police, i have to go do one of those things where i have to point the person out to the police which will be a bit nerve racking

and i was also told the same guy did 3 other people on the same night, and he was on his last warning or whatever so i think he is going down for it, a mugging is bad, a mugging to the police with a knife/weapons makes it 20x worce.

and the reason i expressed myself on here is becuase i knew i would get mature responces not things like 'yeah go find him and brick his house' or what not.

I think you'll be behind one-way glass and they won't see you identifying the mugger if that's what's causing the nerves? Good luck though. Hope he goes down for it.

Re: Getting mugged at knife point.

End of the day, you did the right thing. There is little point in fighting people like that.

That said, one of my friends got mugged a while back and the attacker was "nice" enough to let her keep her sim card. I'm on contract so i guess if my phone got nicked it wouldn't be the end of the world, though it does mean it's worth buying one of those USB SIM card backer-uppers.

As for the wallet, it's nowhere near as bad as you imagine it. Unless you keep personal effects like photos, the worst that happens is you immediately cancel your bank cards and get replacements for the rest. My wallet has - at the moment - couple of bank cards, uni card, oyster, few loyalty cards and maybe some extra uni-specific cards for pubs. All of which i wouldn't lose much sleep over - and all are replaceable.

Your teeth, limbs and life aren't.

Good to hear the lad's going down for it And yep, the fact he had a knife makes it a bajillion times worse in their eyes, we have the home office to thank for that one.

Re: Getting mugged at knife point.

Don't EVER fight back. It's never worth the risk. Sure, you may be trained up, able to fight, and 90% of the time kick the living sh*t out of the little scrote trying to mug you, but 10% of the time there'll be a hidden knife, gun, mates round the corner etc.

I did a knife defense course as part of my karate training, which lasted all day. The first hour was all about why you should never, EVER, get into a knife fight. One tiny mistake and your biceps tendon has been cut, you've had your forearm muscles sliced open, or, worst case scenario, your face or neck. Even if that's not a killer strike, you wouuld then be completely unable to defend yourself.

My karate instructor's instructor, a 6th Dan black belt in combat karate and knife expert got in a knife fight once, and he got hurt. If he's at risk, there's none of you, none at all, who would not be at risk if a knife is involved, I don't care how hard you think you are.

If any of you doubt this, do what we did on a knife course. Get yourself and a mate a cheap white t-shirt each, and get a red marker pen, then have a go at defening yourselves against the stimulated knife. after 45 seconds of determined attack, look at the amount of red you didn't defend yourself against, then imaging each as a 3cm+ deep cut. Gives a good reality check.

I've had some training and I know the basics of how to defend myself against knife attacks, but I would rather give away all my life savings than try and fight someone with a knife. If the same doesn't apply to you, you really need to read up on quite how dangerous knife fights are.

I am on my mob at work so i will post a link when I get to my PC later. You may remember an Ex Champion boxer who was killed with a knife in a night club. Being a big ard bloke he went up against the chavs

Doh. Just looked it up - he got shot dead for asking some blokes to stop smoking.

I do WingTsun kungfu and Brazilian Jui Jitsu and tbh, unless you actually need to defend yourself simply handing over a phone (insurance ftw) is the easiest, safest and morally superior action imho.

Re: Getting mugged at knife point.

I agree that you shouldn't do anything with someone pointing a knife at you unless you are extremely confident and well trained at close arm combat etc. I had quite intense courses on close arm combat etc while in the Army. Many months of intensive training and again refresher courses every now and again!

I have been in quite a few situations that required my training while in and out of the army! Over-confidence can also be a big downfall too! For the average joe-public i would say don't aggravate the situation. If in doubt, run!

Like when you hear that avoiding violence is the best form of defence? ....... Or something like that.

I slowly arced back towards the bus station so as not to walk towards them. They actually follwed me back to the bus station where a security man was stood looking over. I stopped nearby and turned around and looked at them as if to say WTF. They started walking awkwardly as if they did not know where they were going. But soon they carried on walking out the other exit. Very weird.

The best defense, being aware of what's going on around you so that you can avoid problems. Second best is a CCW.

Re: Getting mugged at knife point.

I can imagine how you felt, I was mugged with a smashed glass bottle held to my throat. This was way back when I had no phone and no wallet, they got all the cash in my pockets - they frisked me down for everthing.

During the day I still have all my cards and stuff with me but at night I only take cash needed and may be a ATM card if I not sure how much cash I'll need - everything else is left at home.

Back when I used to bin-raid on a regular basis, I always had one in my pocket. Luckily, I never had to try using it since nobody's tried to mug me since I was 15.

Against two people armed with a 10" blade and a bottle though? No way. I'd not only hand over my phone and wallet, I'd hand over my clothes and wedding ring if they ordered me to! What a crap thing to happen watforddude, here's hoping they catch them and put them away for a while.

They used to sell stuff like that from a company called spytech. One thing was this can of Defender Spray. It comes either in blue or green. You spray the gits with this pocket sized spray can in the face. With either Blue or green die. You can't wash that of for weeks. So with the police just tell them the Blue/green man did it.
But they sold lots of dodgy stuff then. like plastic knifes for airports. They sure are not getting away with selling that stuff now. Still, they do a simliar jar of stuff you put on your valubles. If they get it on their hands it won't wash off. Not that usefull though.

My dad has one of those a 'kubotan' always wonderd what it was.

even if i knew that there was a 99% chance of getting the knife one one of them, ive had a wine bottle of my head so either way i really couldnt do anything about it, i may sound silly but also to scared to try anything either.
