Re: Gurkha veterans & their rights.

I'm ashamed that this Government will not allow a former Gurkha to live in the UK. What more do these guys have to do???? I mean they already fought for this country around the world (and still do), and yet some illegal immigrant will be allowed to stay here with benefits and all the trimmings. What the hell is it with this damn Government???? There more interested in helping an illegal immigrant with no skills, than a solider who fought for us !!!

Why do people keep bringing up illegal immigrants in this thread? Regardless of my feelings on the subject of immigration it has nothing to do with how these chaps are being treated. If you want to constructively criticise a government for the way in which it treats its troops why not find a better more relevant example for comparison.

It is appalling. Seemingly they have to have 20 years service but I have seen reported that a Gurkha Rifleman is only allowed to serve for 15 years! Catch-22 anyone?

Re: Gurkha veterans & their rights.

Just seen this on the 6 o'clock news. I'm seething. Absolutely ashamed and disgusted with the government over this. A Gurkha named Tupta carried my severely wounded great grandfather back from the front line on June 22 1915, effectively saving his life. He never forgot this man and used to push my uncle John around on his tricycle calling him Johnny Tupta (Gurkhas are nick named Johnny Gurkha) These proud people have never let us down and we can't even be bothered to make a small sacrifice for them. Disgraceful.

The reason for the reference to illegal immigrants is as i have previously stated- They seem to be afford the right to stay, benefits etc etc Where as these Gurkha soldiers instead of being allowed to live in the UK, are told to go home!! Now where is the justice ???

My Father served with the Gurkha's in WW2. He told me how much they revere Britain and love all things British, lord knows why, we don't deserve their admiration.

Re: Gurkha veterans & their rights.

    Fair? WTF?
It is really constructive to bring illegal immigrants into this arguement.
When British troops returning from Iraq face abuse from so called Muslims. Okay, maybe not illegal immigrants. But bloody hell. Why let these people live here and turn Gurkha's away?

It is as if to say "You know what? Don't bother giving your lives to fight for our country. It's full of Chav's. Already did? Ha ha. Sucker. What, you expecting special treatment Eh?"

Anyone who risks their lives for our country should be treated as a UK citizen. Even if they have not fought in a war but would be if one broke out. Well, they were/are considered Part of the uk army right?

Re: Gurkha veterans & their rights.

If they put their lives on the line for us, then they should be able to live the rest of that life on British soil without constraints.

The recruitment process is hard enough to guarantee them entry tbh - a damned sight harder than any test the government could come up with..

Re: Gurkha veterans & their rights.

That's gratitude for you. That people who fight and put themselves in harm's way for this country might be denied residency by a bunch of stringent conditions leaves me slightly dumbfounded.
The more I read the news, the more politics seems like some kind of moral limbo. How low can you go?

    Here's what I wrote:

    Dear Mr ****,

I write with regard to the new rules regarding the rights of ex-Gurkha soldiers to settle in the United Kingdom announced today (24/4/09).

In my opinion, to deny settlement rights to any person who has taken up arms for this country (and to their immediate family) is not only immoral, but also absurd. I urge you to press for full settlement rights for all former and current Gurkha soldiers.

    Yours sincerely,

Re: Gurkha veterans & their rights.

If we granted rights to residency to every Gurkha, and immediate family, who has fought alongside our forces, wouldn't we be required to offer the same to every other coalition force?
My only concern is should I hide my true identity? A costume maybe?

Re: Gurkha veterans & their rights.

Paul Im not an expert but I always thought the Ghurkas where actually part of the british army and not just a coalition force. Coalition forces are more a case of countries coming together to fight for a mutually beneficial cause whereas the ghurkas fought for the british cause.

I think its disgusting the way they are being treated.

Id like to know the opinions from the ppl who have voted yes on this poll though to see how they think its fair
