I prefer AT, the original Nemesis is the best one, plus Air is wicked! Although TP has been getting a lot of new rides recently, I last went there in 07.

I really enjoyed TP when I went there about three years ago, had just as much fun as the last time I went to AT (which was probably nearer 10 years ago ). Nemesis Revenge or whatever it's called isn't a patch on the original but still good fun, and there are loads of other good rides. I really enjoyed some of the non-coaster ones. The one where you ride up a column and then get dropped is properly scary because you fall for about half a second longer than you think you should- arrrgh! Then there's a couple of 'big swing' rides that get you loads of zero-g airtime if you launch yourself at the top.
Don't forget your sunscreen if you go on a sunny day. And take a packed lunch unless you're minted.
Oh, and if you do drive up to AT, stop in Uttoxeter on the way back, there's a chippy there that sells deep fried black pudding, which is a delicacy I've never come across further south.
thorpe park its closer and less money on gas and you wont have to set of as earlie so you can enjoy the rides more
burrellhead
+1 for Thorpe Park, went there last Summer.
Alton Towers is overrated and the journey is horrible if you have to drive.
Having done both god knows how many times I would still choose AT over TP, not because the rides are better (TP is pretty much on a par if not better now) but AT has a nicer feel when you are in the park.
If you just want a day out go to Thorpe Park, it is fantastic. If you have a whole weekend and can stay over in a b&b then go to Alton Towers.
Love both though and really want to go to TP to go on Saw.
I agree journey to AT is not so comfy but it was worth it as soon as we got there
long wait and rain didnt stop us from having a lot of fun
I have only been to Alton Twoers so i cant really compare. However i can tell you that Alton Towers a blast the only draw back was the cues like with any theme park. When i went i managed to get on all 3 big rides; Rita queen of speed, Oblivion and Nemisis. If you do decide to go you wont be dissapointed.
