If you did get a netbook get a bigger screen and a keyboard and mouse for your digs. That way your get the advantage of taking something small around without having to put up with the small screen when at home. Money for beer is important, as my computer was better than my unis were I had one of my flat mates rent it for writing up the dissertation. If you can type quickly there is good money in typing up other peoples, I was payed 100 quid for doing one and it only took and evening/night.

do you mean the difference between the white plastic macbook and the unibody aluminium macbook pro?

or do you mean the difference between the first unibody aluminium macbook and the newer 13" macbook pro?

either way, there is value in the higher end one, backlit keyboard, huge battery life, SD card reader and much improved display

    Re: Laptop for Uni

From experience with a netbook at Uni, I'd say avoid if possible, there just not good enough.

For me personally I ended up getting a Samsung Q310, mostly because it was small and light, but also because it had fantastic specs for the price!

For me, from experience, I have tried three different types of laptops at Uni, a netbook, an Acer 15" widescreen/heavy jobby and the Samsung Q310, my recommendations to watch out for are:

    - Keyboard size, not too little, as typing fast on small keyboards isn't so easy.
    - Screen size, last thing you want is to be squinting at the screen.
    - Weight, I found this to be extremely important, as lugging the 15" laptop around with me for a day, got to be rather annoying as it was very heavy for what it was.

    - Spec, it doesn't mean everything, but once I got to Uni, I was glad I ended up getting a decent spec laptop, as Uni provided a lot of Key/Serials for software to students (educational licenses) for a lot of the Adobe software, Oracle (database design), MS Office and a fair bit more, so instantly I had access to some rather demanding software, for free so having a bit of power made the use of them a lot easier and fun

Just my 2p, the mabook is not a bad laptop, but with Uni, it's more of a fashion accessory then a necessity. However it does fully depend on what your doing, for me a Mac is aimed at, media, such as, music, video, photography and graphics design. If it's for office stuff and basic media work, then get a cheaper laptop, slap Windows 7 on and you'll be sorted.

Without getting into the whole Apple vs Windows machines and derailing the thread, I'll disagree. There's nothing to prove that Macbooks last long than normal laptops.

Alot of people have recommended Dell (and rightly so imo). With the macbooks you pay a hefty premium just for the brand, and the specs normally compared to a Windows machines counterpart for the same sort of price are shocking.

Considering the OP is a student, or going to be one shortly, I'd say the amount of money he/she is spending is a huge factor.

    Re: Laptop for Uni

Longest lasting notebook i've ever had was actually an old VAIO fx605

The abuse it took was brilliant, the plastic finish hides scratches and wear marks.
I think people have actually taken a big step back in many ways with how laptops have been designed of late.

But anyway, from memory, here is some stats
2 * Clevo Chassis (old alienware) average life 18 months, incredibly high performance thanks to desktop parts! now both DEAD.
4 * Sony VAIOs, all going strong, the oldest is 8 years, and used by my dad. Only upgrades where RAM + HDD (more space).
    1 * Asus chassis 3 years (DIED).
1 * Fujitsu semans 2 years, heavy use.
1 * Toshiba tablet PC dropped down the staircase, still works but tablet functionality reduced (so thats 5 years)
1 * Toshiba tablet tecra m4, 4 years old, going strong, had very heavy use for first 18 months, now seldom used.

So only 3 out of that list are dead, the clevos just because they where utter ***k, the asus because it was brithday pressie for mum, god knows what she did to it during its life.

Yeah paper comparisons will probably make the macbook look expensive, and you dont pay for a brand, that doesnt work. Theres factors that dont get quantified on paper specs that are important.

You pay for features that simply dont exist on laptops, you pay for a level of engineering that simply doesnt exist on laptops, you pay for support and userbase that is rare on laptops. You can't find a 13" laptop that you would be happy to use everyday, easy to carry around, backlit keyboard, realistic 5 hours battery life, good screen, slim size and looks good(!) for the same price as the macbook.

I wish there was, but there isnt. You can get a 15" laptop with beefier specs but whos gonna break their back lugging a 15" daily.

I agree, i miss matt/fine textured finishes that hid scratches etc. I really dont care for the gloss black movement on portable goods. Its nice on the static PS3 and HDTV etc, but it just gets wrecked on anything portable

Yup, i've got those acid sweat marks on two laptops of mine either side of the touch pad.

How can that happen? Choose a material which dosen't have that?

no, because too many feckwitts make up the population, they just want something shiny, rather than making the informed decision us better people make.

then again, i did just by a p series vaio.
