    Laptop for Uni

Ok starting uni is sept and thought id ask for any recommendations for laptops

So far ive seen a good few laptops but not many giving studen discount, however one option is a Macbook with discount and a free ipod touch.

    So anyone got any recommendations?

or know any places that give discounts?

Check out Dell's Studio range. We got my sister one (Dell Studio 17") for around £650ish.

But it also depends if you want to lug it around in which case I'd say go with a 15" or even a netbook.

    Dell Studio 15 Laptops.

You can get a pretty high-spec'd laptop for around 600.

    http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/pr...b310ef3cd91677

The 4th one. Recommend optional extras: CPU (maybe, 50 to decrease clock, increase cache and FSB), Blacklit keyboard (because it is cool), Bluetooth (always useful) and Screen (Full 1080p is 1337)

Dont forget to use 5-10% vouchers that you find floating around, 5% on quidco, and 6% student discount.

+1 for the Dell's, i was linked to this site which sells refurb'd, got my Studio 17 with a fair chunk (£100+) off of it and it was effectively brand new. never did figure why/if it was truly refurb'd. Comes with a 3 year dell warranty!

    Re: Laptop for Uni

may as well check Dell outlet
dell's offical store for refurbs and stuff. sometimes computers are on there simply because someone ordered it and after it was ready to be shipped the customer cancelled so someone else can buy it for less.

If it's just for note taking, you won't need anything powerful, check out some of these deals...

...add in a portable HDD and a bigger screen to leave permanently at your desk and you could even have some money left over!

    Re: Laptop for Uni

What course are you doing, what type of notes will you be taking in lectures?

Been dislexic i liked taking notes on laptops, however doing an engineering/mathsie degree, i found i had to make annotations that aren't easy on laptops.

I fell in love with tablet PCs. Even the most anti-MS die hard lecturer really liked it. I was using so called "convertables" rather than full slate, this ment they had a full sized qwerty keyboard with a touchpanel that could tiwzel, so be used as a full slate (just thicker) but also as a laptop. This made note taking much better for me, and is years ahead of the conventional.

Macbook.... pfft i like right click, it doubles my User Interaction productivity.
(also about the lasting, a good tablet will easily last 3 years, unless you drop it down two flights of stairs, without any form of case padding.)

    Re: Laptop for Uni

im only going to be taking word notes so tablet wouldnt be much use and probably would cause more of a problem as my hand writing is bad.

    Re: Laptop for Uni

Get a netbook for notetaking; at <£300 you can buy more beer and drugs to fuel your student lifestyle!

With upto 7hrs battery you are not going to run out of juice either.

not really, laptops i've had tend to die on battery, get generally beat up, the screens dim and yellow out after 2-3 years and generally get rickety. New MBPs feel so solid and are built so simple that theres not much to go loose or wrong with them
