Probiotics..more like ProBS say the Efsa

Health claim of probiotics not accepted.

£220m-a-year 'dairy shots' industry in disarray following EU scientists' ruling.

Of 180 claims for probiotic ingredients, the EU's food agency the European Food Safety Authority (Efsa) threw out every one. Ten were rejected outright and a 21-member expert panel could not assess the remaining 170 because the ingredients for which the claims were made could not be identified.

I thought it had already been shown that probiotics don't do much - prebiotics are better.

Yes, but are prebiotics just as unproven? Anyone eating a healthy balanced diet would find them equally nu-necessary.

    I want to make an advert for TV that goes like this ;

    Slow and sluggish digestion?

Try getting off your ballooning behind, turning off loose women and going for a little bit of exercise.

That's the reason for having a sluggish feeling in you gut for god sakes. A bit of exercise helps with most peoples digestive 'issues' they experience.

Lol, that's what I've been saying since I first saw those stupid adverts. They're expensive placebos at best.

I hear Danone had a new flavour in the pipeline, 'huile du serpent'.

Slow and sluggish? Drink coffee. Works for me. Caffeine = best drug (Ok some would say alcohol).

Coffee doesn't aid my slow and sluggish digestive tract, in fact nothing will

This is because I've got a nice big part of my stomach that is paralysed. As such, when it's supposed to expand and contract to move stuff along(Peristalsis), it doesn't.

They're rather more proven than pro-biotics, but yes of course, a healthy balanced diet is best of all. Just some people don't have that, and in that instance pre-biotics actually do make a difference, as opposed to pro-biotics.

Re: Probiotics..more like ProBS say the Efsa

As I understand it, all of the bacteria in yoghurts that are supposed to be beneficial for your gut are killed off in your stomach acid before they even have a chance of getting to your gut in the first place. Hence, these claims have always been a bit of a joke.

Presumably the best way of repopulating the acidophilus in your intestines after, say, a course of antibiotics is to take some acidophilus tablets that aren't broken down in your stomach (can't remember the name for such tablets), but make it through to your intestines intact.

Actually the best way is probably to make sure to eat plenty of pre-biotics - the gut will naturally repopulate with the 'right kind' of bacteria and the pre-biotics just give them extra nutrition.

The only time I tend to have them is after I have been on a course of antibiotics as my immune system is pretty shot afterwards.

I've always thought the bloated thing was more about suggestion, because as we all know woman are stupid and suggestible otherwise we'd never get any.

So you create a symptom that even the least hypochondriac one out there will believe they suffer from and you sell them tiny little pots of snake oil.... Jobs a goodden.

Re: Probiotics..more like ProBS say the Efsa

    Hmm :/

Bloating happens when you eat too much, period.

If I eat 2500 calories which are mainly bread, cakes, normal foods etc, my belly will inflate like a balloon, and as I have abs, it will actually be the same size as my chest (got a big chest) if you look at me from a side view.

But, if I eat a low carb diet, below 2500 calories, my chest will stick out far futher than my belly and it will be flat.

I have it when I'm bloated, feel like crap.

Just dont eat too many carbs + calories.
