    Beware.........

. so, I get this telephone call today...

Ring Ring ... RIng Ring.... I answer

Caller:"Good morning can I speak to ,, <insert my name here> "please" (cue sound of busy background open plan office

    Me:"speaking"

Caller:"Morning Mr xxx, this is Shaun calling from Telewest"

    Me:"Oh Hi"

Caller: "Before we go any further, for security reasons could you confirm your password please"

    Me: "errrrrmmm no"

Caller: "Whys that Mr xxxx "

Me: "erm.. because I have absolutley no idea who you are , you say your name is Shaun from Telewest, but I have no proof of that .. and the first thing you do is ask for my password ?"

Caller: "Ok.. thanks for your time goodbye" Click

Clever little fookers... thats gonna catch some people out no doubt.. so be warned and spread the news. Im sure that a lot of people use the same password for a lot of their applications/mobile phone/ bank accounts etc etc. and someones gopnna blab.. cos it felt so natural to go

    "Yeah sure.. its F.... erm... UC.....K Zero F F"

Very crafty, if they rung early enough I would have just given it to them to get rid of them.

    Thanks for the heads up.

I don’t know, but anyone with an ounce of intelligence would not fall for that one.

Actually you'd be surprised. If it seems real (office can be heard in the background), you are on Telewest, and taking the password seems to be for your protection, then the majority of people will probably fall for it.

call up Telewest and tell them about it...might make them inform all their customers about this scam, at least they would if they were a good company.

When you have a Telewest or NTL service hey ask you to setup a password so they can confirm its you before making any changes to your account. Your supposed to tell the phone rep the password when you call them to modify your services.

Erm, out of curiosity, what made you think it wasn't Telewest? (maybe you aren't with them, that would give it away).

But if you are, how do you know it isn't?

if YOU RING THEM, you expect to tell them it...

but if THEY RING YOU.......they'd already KNOW you were the right person cos they rang the number that they have as an account...and they'd only ring you if you'd asked them to do so.

no telewest person would really ring you, would they? especially as noted that they'd already know who you are so a password would be fairly ineffective by that stage..
