    Books that move you..

Due to the recent 'white-out', I have been spending a significant amount of time cooped up on my sofa devouring as many books as humanly possible. It lead me to think about books that move you, grip you, books you cannot put down despite any prevailing forces of hunger, tiredness or a large to-do list sitting by your side.. I've started a list which I would love to be extended by your own recommendations:

    - The Book Thief - Markus Zusak
    - The Glass Castle - Jeanette Walls
    - The White Tiger - Aravind Adiga
    - The Lovely Bones - Alice Sebold

Nikki Sixx's heroin Diaries... the only book i've ever read cover to cover in one sitting... it took me 12 hours and was totally worth it...

its a book about a rock star junkie and contains diary entries when he was at his worst and darkest time in his life...

an epic book that anyone who likes music anywhere should read!

Russell Brand - My Bookie Wook!
my girlfriend bought me this when i couldnt stand him, trying to get over the complete hatred of him - but his book is genius! a complete look at his warped life unrestrained!

Any of the Red Dwarf Books!
i first read one when i bought it in an airport about 10 years ago and have bought and read the rest since - they are pure genius in textbook RD comedy and done very well. even when authors Grant & Naylor went their separate ways and made one final book each on their own they were both really well done!

I found The Alchemist to be a small read, however it was a light hearted good book.

Going for the cliche's here - However, everyone's gotta love the lord of the rings trilogy.
I'm re-reading the first book now, never too old!

I love anything by Torey Hayden. She is a special needs teacher, and she writes about some of the extroadinary children she has cared for and helped over the years. Lady is an inspiration to me.

    Re: Books that move you..

Lets see, perhaps not books that I haven't been able to put down, but books that have had an effect on me and made me think a lot about various things:

The Grapes of Wrath - John Steinbeck
Lanark: A Life in Four Books - Alasdair Gray
The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists - Robert Tressell
    The Bridge - Iain Banks

Books that I can't put down usually make much lighter reading material, Lee Childs, Harlan Coben, Simon Kernick, Kathy Reichs, and similar. I can read one of those is about a day and a half if I have nothing better do do (like when I'm supposed to be working offshore).

I have to say though, ridiculous as the game was (mind you, it was also ridiculously fun), the stories behind it were fantastic, and the characters were great. It's extremely interesting how all of the people mesh together in a time that was so insanely turbulent.

Dynasty Warriors is a famous game about the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, where you play various generals from the time.

It's famous for a fair few reasons

    1) They've released virtually the same game about 5 times with one new feature per title, but still loads of people buy it
    2) People pump hundreds of hours into it to level up each and every general
    3) The entire game is played to rapid guitar music, not exactly reminiscent of ancient China
    4) Each general in the game doesn't command armies, but rather has ridiculous combos that allow him to massacre the enemy soldiers, it's possible to kill over 1000 enemy troops in one battle with a big sword
    5) The attacks are insane, usually made up of massive combos with all the slicing you'd expect from a spectacular hack and slash, for instance spinning an enormous spear around yourself and wiping out 20 people in one sweep.

So yeah, it's completely and utterly ridiculous, but nonetheless based around the same subject, and hence I find that era fascinating - as you alluded to in your post. But I suspect the novel is slightly more realistic

    Hope that explains it somewhat
