Good books on internet

I'm looking for decent books on internet. I know that is a big thing and a lot of different subjects come under that.

In a book store I saw Internet for dummys, Hacking for dummys and other books on hacking Lan.
I think Internet for Dummys would have some usefull things in it But looking through the index it seemed to stray away from what I'm interested in. And hacking lan seems like it would give me a good understanding on security but I think it is too advanced for me. I am wanting to learn about configuring internet conections, learn about the different ports. I want to understand all the settings in me firewall and how it works.

Can anyone recomend some good books I can read as I sit outside in the Sun?
Or which of those books do reckon I should go for? I think I may go for Hacking for dummies. I think that was hacking Lan. I guess security is a major thing for me.

A book on hacking might help but may not be exactly what you are after. Why not look for something more related to networks and firewalls? What you really want is a good book on say Ubuntu and Smoothwall.

This should at least give you the basic idea for setting up a dedicated "router", DHCP server and firewall. There are lots of advanced stuff of course, but NAPT is really quite basic and can be setup via browser access on almost all current router/modems.

I think a Linux book in this regard might offer a better grounding on the subject imho.

I think I'm most interested in ports and protocals and understanding what they all do exactly.
So should I go for a book more on networking or a book more on security?

I guess that networking for dummys would be best then. They have bumper additions that cover loads. Is there not any other books that are really good?

I'll stick my neck out and say the Dummies set of books are not aimed at someone like you. They're written in a way that if you know even the slightest bit about the subject you'll be offended at just how basic they are.

Aim a bit higher than Dummies. Go along to Waterstones (or similar) and browse their Computer section. Flick through a few books and get a feel of the intelligence level.
