Spectacular pictures. I didn't know the name of the volcano and thought that you bashed the keyboard on your head until I saw the link!

Some great shots showing just how angry mother nature can be, even in a relatively minor eruption.

    Cheers - stolen for elsewhere.

That one's me favourite.... love the lightning in the eruption plume

EDIT: Sim, the lightning is caused by the bits of glass and ash and all the other stuff in the plume rubbing together like mad, creating static electricity - exactly the same process as used in dual component (toner & developer) laser printers. The bits rub against each other and become charged (Triboelectrification) and discharge to earth in the form of huuuuge arcs, or lightning

So basically, what we see in that pic is how laser printers work?

Wrong, I'm sure - but its a nice thought

Its just started working again for me, the website was giving me a article not found and sending me to the home page. Must have been a problem with their end.

The reddness may be a result of the iron content in the ash being oxidised. But I'm not sure about that!

The process that creates the lightning is indeed exactly how PART of the laser printer process works - essentially creating a static charge by rubbing particles of stuff together
