Sadly Balls didn't get kicked into touch (sorry - couldn't resist ) and Harriet Harperson survived as well - more's the pity - although not a surprise)

Bugger I really hate Harperson, shes inept and has been the cause of much heartache
for many people in this country. Like declaring that MG Rover where in administration when
- She didn't have the legal right
- They weren't in administration (admittedly they where very close to it but at the time they where still able to trade for a couple of weeks)
How she kept her job after that I don't know
Sadly (even though I wanted a Tory majority) the arch nemesis of reason David Tredinnick survived as well...

Whatever differences in political views we may have, the dumping of this pointless sack of incompetence is news we all can celebrate

You know what? As a rabid Labour-hater, I don't even care that much about Smith. Thursday was generally a ****ing awful night for radicals like myself who'd dared to hope that the Libs would poll ~28%, and thus have 80 seats and a proper right to demand electoral reform. I didn't quite cry myself to sleep, but I was deflated, and I haven't cheered up two days later.
But I was able to get to sleep knowing that Charles Clarke lost his seat. There ain't much justice in this world, but just when you hit your lowest ebb.....
I had a great deal of difficulty finding a google cache of my favourite article on the fat git. It's here, and it's extremely sweary and abusive, so be warned.

Enjoy it while it lasts.
The quote at the top of the page in that article pretty much sums up my biggest issue with politics in this country.
"Politics is the business of getting power and privilege without possessing merit"
I can accept the fact that any system we have, be it FPTP or PR, is not going to work perfectly because the majority of the population are poorly educated, irrational and narrow minded*. However, the fact that our politicians (and union leaders) can wield so much power without much fear of consequence, even if they are either utterly incompetent or pursue there own agenda outside the mandate on which they were elected, is... well to be honest sickening to the point where there aren't actually words to describe my ire.
*You don't fix the problem by excluding people from voting but by actually educating people, and not as we have had to put up with for the last 13years years dragging the whole system down to the lowest common denominator.
Still if the Conservatives and Lib Dems can thrash out some sort of deal then we may yet see some positive changes... even if the first step is only reducing the number of MP's.
