    scooter insurance..

i have a friend who has a record for common assault which was silly of him and a big mistake.

now why should this make his scooter insurance nearly 2 times the non criminal record quote? he's not very happy and some insurers wont even quote him!

over £1000 for 3rd party on a £2000 gilera runner is obscene.. why does common assault affect his scooter insurance.. there not even related! i'd understand if it was GTA or car theft or something..

any help for this poor guy?

    thanks

    Re: scooter insurance..

In the eyes of the insurers having a conviction may show anger issues, which my manifest itself while driving thusly causing an accident.

Basically by having a conviction it pulls him out of the main pool of everyone is the same sort of risk, into one of higher risk due to a criminal record.

As to getting a cheaper quote, i have no idea, but i'm thinking there must be some specialist insurers out there? Doubt he'll get to a normal quote with a criminal record though.

    Re: scooter insurance..

    Insurance is risk based.

If the insurer's database / model shows that people with assault convictions are (independently or not) more likely to make insurance claims, or cause others to make insurance claims against them, then the insurance premium will be weighted accordingly.

    Re: scooter insurance..

Is that like a 50CC scooter or the 125 model? How old is your friend?

Im insuring my en125 in july when im 18 and for third party its only going to cost me £210 (£170 with quidco!), try thebikeinsurer as that gives you the best quotes... the rest are bollox as most of the compare sites gave out quotes of over 1k and individual places wanted over £600!.

    Re: scooter insurance..

Also, he has a Gilera Runner, the No1 choice of teenage idiots everywhere. If you search on ebay now, chances are you'll find at least one 180 that's listed as "still registered as a 50".

Add an assault conviction and as far as the insurance company's concerned, the guy's a massive liability. He'll just have to sell the Runner and get a more sensible scoot I'm afraid- or my suggestion, get a proper 125cc motorcycle: I reckon now that all the hoons have moved onto scooters they're probably much more affordable to insure.

And at the end of the day, the geezer assaulted someone. A relative of mine couldn't get a decent job for a few years because he got very drunk and (along with a few mates) shot out some windows in his street with an air rifle. He wouldn't have dreamed of doing it sober, but it was still extremely stupid, and he paid the price for having a conviction for criminal damage (he was probably lucky to get away with that, could easily have been a firearms offence ).
