    power failures

Would repeated power failures whilst a PC is on damage it any significant way?

we keep getting intermittant power failures at work and i swear my hard drive is making noises now that it wasn't before.

I would imagine so yeah, cos the head on the disk don't get a chance to "park" properly... and they just stop where they are on the platter which is (sorry if this is condescending in anyway - don't know your level of PC-age) rather like a small, thick CD... and it can get scratched, with nasty horrible effects.. like odd noises...

I thought so but didn't want to sound daft by suggesting it.

we had 3 black outs today, at least we found out that the server UPS works.

im fairly sure that most newer drives should be able to cope with a power cut without suffering damage as they all park the heads as soon as power goes ,although i suppose if it is writing/reading it may be able to cause damage

parking a hard drive isnt an issue any more, hasnt been for about 10 years. the only damage would be caused by a 'spike' in the current before it cuts out afaik
