I wouldn't stress too much about it. If that's the only one and the rest is grammatically correct and eloquent enough then I'd imagine they will ignore it.

    Where are you applying to?

    Re: Wow

Ahhh don't worry, it's only a typo. 90% of people probably wouldn't even notice it when they were skimming through a huge chunk of text.

And even if they did, I don't think they would read much into it.

    Where are you applying to?
I remember getting a CV where the applicant claimed they were meticulous with great attention to detail .... and misspelled meticulous. Not only did I grimace at the spelling, but I wondered if they understood what meticulous meant, because if they did, why say it twice?

As for whether it'll be ignored or not, with a Uni, perhaps, but with an employer, perhaps not. I certainly know employers that would not ignore it. It might not be the determining factor, but it would count against. The logic is that if someone is careless enough to let that past on something as important as a job application, then what will their standards be like in mundane, day-to-day work? Am otherwise strong candidate may not lose out because of a silly typo, but if there's another strong candidate without one .....

I'm not so sure about that, especially among the type of people reading personal statements. Spelling mistakes stand out to me as if they were in neon .... providing it's in something someone else has written. My own goofs seem to be in stealth type.

Seriously, it seems to be something about the way the brain works (or mine does, at least). I can write something, spell check it, proof-read in on-screen and then print it and proof-read it on paper and still miss things, in my own work. I think it's because I remember what I meant to write, and half the time, the brain interprets what it sees as what I meant to type, not what my fingers actually did. One reason for thinking this is that if I go back to my work days later after I've forgotten writing it, those same mistakes that were stealthed are now in neon.

Maybe I'm in your 10% but things like that leap out at me. Also, I'd hope that a personal statement isn't that huge in the first place. If it is, redo it.

Sorry nibbler, this probably isn't cheering you up much, but it's how I see it. If you can get it corrected, it's best to do so.

And in case any grammar nazis are planning on pointing out the goofs in my posts, numerous as they are (the goofs, that is, not the posts), I'd just point out that a forum post is not a personal statement.

Don't worry - I deserve to be called stupid. Luckily it can be sent back to me apparently although I may have to repay the £21 fee. No problem as far as I'm concerned. I think it's unforgivable tbh.

Sure I was told at school by a careers officer that they spend on average less than 10s per application when reading personal statements.
