    How to Tag Music Quickly

Hi guys, not sure if this is the right place.

I have just started looking at tagging songs. So the situation is:

    1. have a whole bunch of songs with different artists and song names as filenames
    2. the tags are all over the place for albums etc

Is there a way where I just click one button and it will search my files and just automatically add all the tags (e.g. album, genre, year, etc).

I have checked Tagscanner, Tag&Rename, etc and all of them needs to do this on a per artist basis. Hard for me as I don't know the album names for some of them and it's so manually intensive.

I just want to click one button and it fixes all the different songs for me given I have artist and song name already in the file.

Is there such a software or method?

    Any help appreciated!

Re: How to Tag Music Quickly

The trouble is, the whole concept stands or falls on the *consistency* of your naming schemes - if the filename is the only information the tagger has to go on, then it's inevitably going to get confused if, say, one file is entitled "Rolf Harris - Two Little Boys", another is "Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat Minor [Op. 23] - 1st Movement", another is "Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Let Love In [1994] - 05. Red Right Hand" ... well, you get the picture.

If the files are grouped into a logical order, the situation becomes easier - you could use one of the online databases to fill out the missing metadata fields based on the track length and running order, but from what you're saying (you don't even know the album names for some tracks), that's going to be a non-starter.

The only app I can think of that *might* be able to help you is MusicBrainz Picard - it can create an audio fingerprint for individual files, and if it finds those fingerprints in its database, it can add any missing tag fields. It's not 100% reliable though (even though the MusicBrainz database itself is very accurate), so you're likely to be doing a fair amount of manual tweaking, and the file scanning process is pretty slow, so don't plan on sitting there waiting for it to finish.

Might be worth a shot, anyway.

Re: How to Tag Music Quickly

So the purpose of Tagging, is it the said Track Name 01 to be renamed to its actual Track name, so it displays correctly on iTunes for example?

Why? How will MP3Tag solve the OP's problem?

It has a tag generator and tag converter function, which might be useful in intelligently renaming or tagging the files.

Based on what information? If there's no consistent data for it to establish a pattern, how can it bulk-tag files?

Have a play with it and find out for yourself mate. It was a simple suggestion that the OP might find it useful. Drop the attitude, its not called for.

sigh... it's not an attitude, "mate", I was simply asking how the program you mentioned can do anything to help the OP in what he wants to achieve, given the information he's provided. Just naming random tagging apps without any explanation isn't really helpful.

You obviously don't see how your posts come across to others. Remember, this is not a face to face communication and the posts you made above appear to me (and obviously Tonka777) as antagonistic. I'm sure you don't mean them to appear that way but that is how some people are interpreting them. Its the joys of forums I'm afraid.

Re: How to Tag Music Quickly

OK, to add to the request about how mp3tag may help the OP it has the ability to turn filenames to tags or tags to filenames (among several other tricks). It may help to sort some of the files - I doubt if any one app will fix everything but maybe using several might help the OP achieve what he wants.
