    I think that I want a Dyson...

Our Henry Vacuum cleaner has all-but had it, with the tube still attached by tape and good will
Our cleaner (yes, we are lazy) told us a while ago that we needed a new one, but... you know. Tape.

So Christmas is coming, and I figured that a new vacuum would mean more to me than some extra gadget in my pocket or under the TV, but if i could combine something practical with a gadget, then.. wahey! SO i'm thinking Dyson.

    Opinions please on
    a) if they really are worth it and
    b) any models to get / avoid and
    c) where should I buy from? Ebay?

    Cheers ears!

Re: I think that I want a Dyson...

Dyson's are pretty good at what they do. Only thing I can say is shop around and try a few out as they can be heavy. I know you said you have a cleaner and I'm sure she/he is used to lumping heavy old vacs about.

Avoid the one with the ball like the plague. It's an awful awful design that doesn't work as well as it should. It's not so much the ball thats the issue but it's very difficult to get the thing tilted back and ready for action without it putting up quite a fight. It's also MUCH heavier than the one without the ball.

You haven't speified upright or cylinder come to think of it. The cylinders are ok, but they are very fiddly and again very heavy.

If your going for an upright fine I used to have one but we got rid of it as my poor dear mother found the thing too heavy for her. Ended up getting a Henry, which is still working now

Also have to say that Dyson are legendary with their customer service. I sold a display model DC07when I was working at Curry's and some thieving pikey scum bag had pinched all the tools off it. I phoned Dyson expecting them to say sorry jog on mate but to my astonishment they sent the missing tools out to the customer the very next day, or it could have been the day after.

    Dyson's suck.

i see what you did there
They are over-priced, over-weight and overly purple. Get a much cheaper, new 2-speed Henry or Hetty. Don't change for change's sake or you'll regret it.

To quote James Dyson "Good Design has to solve a problem.” The new mantra ought to be "At Dyson, our sucker is the consumer".

We got a dyson 4 years ago when we moved in. Easily the best performing & reliable vacuum I've used. Even quite simple to take apart and clean when the father-in-law used it to hoover up damp sawdust

You wouldn't need to dismantle a Henry in those circs. Dyson's work ok on carpets but on swarf or anything other than light dust, they fail.

Also, it's so heavy yer missus will end up looking like The Thing. If she already does, its not a problem of course.

AFAIK, its MSIC who wants one, not his other half

We used to have one of the original ones and TBH probably best hoover I've used. As a teenager being asked to jobs in the early i didn't mind hoovering the stairs knowing the Dyson would actually hoover stuff up with very little effort while i was busy giving the two fingered salute while my mums back was turned away.

Re: I think that I want a Dyson...

I have to say Dysons are pretty rubbish in build quality, at least all the people I know who have them including myself, have had parts breaking. Now that there are alot of other vacuums that are bagless, it doesn't even have that one advantage anymore. I'll never buy a Dyson again!

Re: I think that I want a Dyson...

I'm not a Dysan fan. I've known too many people that have had bits break. I am a fan of Sebo. They're relatively little known in the domestic market, but my experience has been that they're very well-built, reliable as hell and work very well. They're not cheap, but they are in Dysan territory, not Kirby. Mine was a bit under £300.

Is that the Japanese arm of the company?

Re: I think that I want a Dyson...

My Mum has been cleaning other peoples houses for the past 40 years, her advice when our vac dies was to get a Henry. Shes seen loads of Dysons die, but Henrys go on forever. You can get spares for Henrys including the tubs, motor, pipes, etc. Only downside is the weight. They are also built in Britain, unlike Dyson who shifted to China to make extra money, probably why Dysons fall apart.

Re: I think that I want a Dyson...

I agre with santa! Get another Henry, they are such a simple design, and so little to go wrong with them. Dysons I was forever cleaning it to restore its function. As others have said Dysons are heavy my partner hated it, I orginally bought a henry as a DIY vac, for the jobs the Dyson could not handle, after the Dyson failed we use the Henry as our main vac and infact bought another one for out new house/upstairs as we were so impessed by them even though the orginal was still working fine. We got the "Green" one this time.
