    electric cat hair

    does cat hair conduct electricity?

say you had a cat, it likes sitting on top of your computer, because the case gets warm and cats lke warm places, a side effect is cat hair gets in your computer. say you didnt clean the insides for a while because you were too busy. would a build up of cat hair fry any computer bits?

be as geeky/nerdy as you like in answering, its a serious question and needs a serious answer.

Well....I can stroke my cat and produce enough electricity to touch his ears and give him a shock..... Honestly though i very much doubt it would affect your pc or my machine would be a very heavy doorstop by now.

    Re: electric cat hair

Cat fur is an insulator - that's why razer121 can stroke his cat and generat3e static electricity (it doesn't leak away.

Of course that assumes that it is a dry cat!

    Re: electric cat hair

Cat hair can kill your PC, by clogging the heat sinks and allowing static electricity to build up.

    Re: electric cat hair

I have a different issue with the cats.
    1) I still use CRT monitors and the cats like to sleep on top of them, usually totally blocking the vents and often obscuring part of the screen with a tail.
    2) They like to sleep on top of the network switch, also covering the vents on its side, and often knocking the router off the top.
    3) They bring wildlife in. Not computer related I realise but a significant problem if you dont like the type of mice that can move on their own.

    Re: electric cat hair

My friends cat sleeps ontop of his wireless keyboard (now with a flat battery), with its head ontop of the router.
He added a new hard drive recently and had to clean quite a bit of cat hair out of the intake fans and the top fans and off the top of the graphics card and....

Well you get the idea. Hence this thread.

Cat hair ended up ruining the gpu fan on a friends computer recently, it had not been cleaned for several months..

    Re: electric cat hair

We used to have a long-haired Himalayan Colour-Point chap, who, unbeknownst to me used to like to tuck himself in behind the PC because it was obviously warm & snuggly.... killed the case fan and gave him a fright when he got his fur caught!!
